I've just recently discovered Gerritsen's thrillers and am I glad I did! Vanish is the fifth one I've read and it equals her first bestseller, Harvest. (If you haven't read that one, by all means do!)
Vanish features returning characters Dr. Maura Isles (a forensic pathologist) and Jane Rizzoli, an irrepressible cop with the Boston PD. Rizzoli's need to close her cases has often encouraged risky behavior. This time new mother Rizzoli brings her infant daughter where angels fear to tread.
The plot has an international and political flavor to it. Mila, a seventeen year old girl from Bellarus and her friend Anja have been promised a better life in the United States. Initially they are transported to Mexico where Anja is murdered. Mila is brought across the border and joins several other Eastern European teenagers in a country house in Virginia. There they are imprisoned and forced into prostitution. Following a tragic blood bath Mila and her friend Olena escape and are taken in by Joe Roke, a loner who is being sought by police for killing a police officer in Connecticut.
Mila, Olena and Joe's attempts to notify police about the prostitution ring are thwarted by government intelligence agencies. As Maura Isles and cop Jane become involved in the case they incur the wrath of the FBI, which tries to block their attempts to discover who Mila, Olena and Joe really are and why the government is so anxious to keep their stories under wraps.
Impostors abound in this can't-put-it-down novel. My only question is, how does Gerritsen come up with one riveting plot after another?
