Book Reviews of ValaidaBook Review: FICTIONAL BIOGRAPHY THAT FALLS SHORT Summary: 2 Stars
Having been keen on the recordings of Valaida ever since I first heard them some 40 years ago, I was looking forward to reading this book. To be fair to its author, it is described as a novel, yet one can't escape the fact that it deals with the life of an actual person, whose photographs adorn it. It contains much valuable information, and dispels the myth that Valaida had been incarcerated in a concentration camp during the war. And yet the book is shot through with imagined scenes and dialogue, which undermine its authenticity. What I found particularly obtrusive was a fictionalised account of the day of Valaida's final appearance, which culminated in her death, and which is intercut chronologically throughout the book. There is also a singularly ill-judged critique of her English recordings, which I suspect was written purely for effect. Had Ms. Allen resisted the temptation to embroider the known facts, this could have been a worthwhile addition to the canon of jazz biography. But at the end I found myself asking "Would Valaida have been happy with this as an account of her life?", and I suspect the answer would be no.
Summary of ValaidaFrom her childhood in Chattanooga to her Harlem debut; from touring the Jim Crow South to showcasing in Shanghai and London, Valaida lived large, blazing a trail with energy and style. Based on the story of Valaida Snow, one of jazz?s first female trumpeters, this is an enthralling, seductive, deeply imagined novel. Candace Allen received her BA from Harvard before attending New York University?s School of Film and Television. A former Hollywood screenwriter and assistant director, she was the first African-American woman to become a member of the Director?s Guild of America.
