Book Reviews of VBook Review: Deeper and more meaningful than you might expect... Summary: 5 Stars
All right, I'll confess. It's a freakin' novelization of a superb 1983 television miniseries and its only so-so follow-up miniseries from a year later. That said, THIS is the book that not only made me an A.C. Crispin fan-for-life but also tuned me in to a deeper and more under-the-hood form of science fiction than could be gleaned from television (or in a movie theater, for that matter). The year was 1983 and I was --embarassingly enough-- thirteen years old. Once I had digested Ms. Crispin's excellent interwoven character development that FAR exceeded the depth of even Kenneth Johnson's riveting teleplay, I realized that science fiction as a LITERARY art form needed some serious exploration.
In other words, I picked this book up simply to relive the awesomeness of a miniseries that I'd seen a few months earlier. What I GOT from this book was an on-ramp to the worlds offered by Asimov, Heinlein, Niven, and Varley. There is no way I'm ever going to be able to thank Ms. Crispin for that but I can at least take a crack at it by saying so here, publicly.
Kenneth Johnson's vision and all its underlying themes are alive and well in this excellent adaptation --from the conflicts in the Bernstein and the Maxwell families to the lightning-fast decisions that must be made by Donovan and Leonetti; from Juliet's sudden transition from conservative med student to untempered resistance leader, to even a little "bad guy" insight into the workings of Diana's mind. It's robust, it's character-driven, it delivers the action, and it gets Johnson's point across without being preachy. If you can get ahold of this adaptation, by all means do so. Then write a thank-you letter to Ms. Crispin.
Summary of VKenneth Johnson's Warner Bros. television series V swept the nation and drew in hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide. Now, the novel V is finally back in print, with an all-new, never-before-seen revised ending.
V tells the exciting story of mysterious Alien visitors who are ready to solve Earth's problems. But soon after arriving, the Aliens' true nature is revealed, and like so many oppressive regimes of Earth's past, as long as people are not directly under attack, they will turn a blind eye to their tyrannical overlords. Now it is up to a small band of resistance fighters who know the aliens' true nature to stand up for all of humanity. Few people are quick to join their cause, and the fight to expose the aliens to the public will not be an easy one.
With fast-paced action, political intrigue and memorable characters, V is sure to stir fond memories for fans of the original miniseries, as well as make fans out of a new generation.
