Book Reviews of Up Till Now: The AutobiographyBook Review: Fantastic Stuff! Summary: 5 Stars
Like a lot of people I only really bought this book as I'm a fan of the original Star Trek series. However, I must also admit to being a bit of a fan of his music. "Has Been" was great, but if you can, try and track down "In Love" - it's brilliant.
I really enjoyed this book and I avoided doing what I do with many biographies by actors, musicians, etc, I didn't skip any bits. I did buy this with an attitude: I'll read about the Star Trek period, but miss out the rest, but I didn't.
The book is easy to read and it's refreshing to read about a star (as that's what Our William is) who doesn't take himself too seriously. For example there's a great line about a review he'd had when Star Trek was first aired, he'd been called 'wooden'. Bill writes in the book that this didn't bother him at the time and it's continued not to bother him for the last forty years!
I would heartily recommend this book, it can be sad, touching and laugh-out-loud funny.
William, you are really something!
Book Review: Up Til Now Summary: 5 Stars
"Up Til Now" a self-exam by William Shatner at his personal experiences in life is an interesting read. In his introspective book, he reviews his relationships with co-stars, and his early drama roles. He doesn't hold back on criticism leveled at him for his foolishness and cocky attitude. Byproducts of youth mostly, this ambitious thespian has had many ups and downs in his career, but finds comfort in sharing them with his fans. I highly recommend this book , for fans of Shatner will find his personal revelations eye opening and give more insight into the man behind the Captain.
One of his funniest memories was noting the budget cuts for the TV series "Star Trek" and remarking that they would have to do the next several shows on the ship(Enterprise). Classic .
Book Review: Some of it will ring true in you as well Summary: 4 Stars
Despite the public perception of Shatner's over-acting and bombastic persona, you'll find by reading this book that he's a likable guy. Under the surface, you'll probably find that this Hollywood celebrity may have a lot in common with you. He was insecure and worried about finding a career in acting early in his life, and always struggled to find that steady job, keep his kids sheltered and safe, and keep his marriage(s) together. He's had some of the tough times many of us have, yet by keeping his mind open to new ideas he's branched off from acting to writing, commercials, and starting a few charities in light of events that have touched his life.
You don't need to be a Star Trek fan to love this book. If you are interested in acting or directing, look no farther. Shatner relates his experiences acting on Broadway in the '50s, doing TV in Hollywood in the '60s, '70s, and '80s, and directing a few movies and features in the '80s through today. Shatner's career is a snapshot of a profession, and he relates his troubles and triumphs in the book.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with "Up Till Now," finding it to be much more entertaining than I thought it would be. Additionally, it isn't too obsessive with Star Trek nor James T. Kirk, which is refreshing.
