Book Reviews of Up Till Now: The AutobiographyBook Review: My Dad's wish list Summary: 5 Stars
I wasn't into the pop culture of Star Trek until I read Star Trek Memories over a decade ago. But the lure of this part of Americana goes beyond the fans of the original show. Shatner continues with the fascinating story of how the phenomenon all came together. Shatner seems to have loosened up a bit and even allowed for more self-deprecating humor then the previous Star Trek tell-alls.
I got this for my Dad but, fortunately, I had time to read it first. It was on his wish list along with How to Measure Anything: Finding the Value of "Intangibles" in Business, which I also had a chance to read first. While, of course, dealing with very different topics both are so stunning they make you laugh just because of the shock of the facts.
Book Review: Very funny Summary: 5 Stars
This si a very funnily-written book by an actor who has had a long career behind him. While he is of course most knwon for his part as James Kirk In Star Trek, the book does not dwell too long on that which is both fortunate and unfortunate. He does however do a hilarious recount of all the available Star Trek merchandise on over one page. Indeed, it is that part which made him what he is. However the rest of his life is also very interesting from his struggling days up to Boston Legal. What is more interesting is of course his recounts of the more recent Boston Legal times. He shows himself to have a great sense of humor about everything and above all about himself and this makes the bok a great read. There are alsosome episodes from the very bad TJ Hooer series which also make the book worth the buy.
Book Review: A True Pop Icon Summary: 5 Stars
William Shatner is truly a pop icon.
In an era when "stardom" comes from appearing a few minutes on reality-TV, Shatner built his now six-decade career on television from the tough work of live stage performances and - with a little luck and plenty of tough times - has endured like very few actors/entertainers.
With co-author David Fisher, Shatner tackles his recollections on life in front of and behind the camera. Though there are points that had previously been chronicled in his previous books, Shatner again delivers a fascinating and honest memoir, with hefty doses of humor.
And with no end in sight, this truly is an autobiography that is a snap-shot at a point in time, but a read that is out of this world.
Book Review: LOVED IT! Summary: 5 Stars
I just finished reading "Up Till Now," and am sad it's over. Shatner writes from the heart, and made me really "feel." I admire his ability to laugh at himself, and find humor in difficult situations. I learned a lot from the book-- about the acting industry, alcoholism, relationships that many of us deal with everyday. I, like Shatner, have fear of seeing a monster out the the window of a jetliner! I laud him for captivating me from front to cover. Mr. Shatner has class, and I hope he writes another book!
Book Review: Very Interesting, Even for Non-Star Trek Fan Summary: 5 Stars
I like William Shatner. I think he is a funny guy. I was never a big Star Trek fan, I didn't get into Tek-War, and I have never shopped Price-Line. But, Shatner just makes me laugh. This book was a very interesting look into the personal life of a workaholic actor.
This book has its serious moments, it had its laugh out loud moments, It is just a well written, fun to read book. Highly recommended. (I can't stop putting in "Highly recommended", must be too many eBay auctions.)
