Book Reviews of Under the Sabers: The Unwritten Code of Army Wives

Book Review: Amazing historical and characters
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is very well-written, facts about military life we know but don't think a lot about, since we don't live in their world. I think this author has a huge love and respect for the military, and would fight to the death if she had to. An amazing woman in her own right, the insight to the personalities of these women and men is incredible. Being a widow of a civilian, she caught Rinni's wife and their vibrant love they had together, and how she responded to it. I truly enjoyed the history of the area, and it is obvious her love for it. Her parents did good!

Being a fan of Army Wives ever since the first season, I actually was glad to read this. Hollywood has to gloss over reality to make it a sell to most people. For example, Claudia Joy's husband came back. He had to for the series, but before he did (and in the book) I cried and cried, so very genuine what she was going through. But I feel like Army Wives does an excellent job at not sugar coating. And I disagree that the writer doesn't explain to us the unwritten code. My heart breaks and my anger with how our military is so badly treated doesn't bode well to us as a society. What our armed forces do is incredible, and we do owe our lives and our freedom to them! The treatment of the people of other countries, as they kill our innocent men and women, are taken care of better, than our own.

My husband and I hated to ever be away from each other, my salute to these women, men and children as they give up this blessed side of life. Just think, sending your loved one off to a foreign country and not knowing how they were going to come back to you, in a coffin, maimed, or 'whole'. Which what the military has to deal with mentally and physically, I would think they would never be the same. Most all of the males in my family have served in the military, and I had contemplated it numerous times. But the fear of being killed and the unknown was 'too' much for me.

When you think about how many military reside in that area, and how violence in our society is sugar coated, and not getting to the root of the problem, it should not have become a surprise. Living in Phoenix, AZ, look at what happened Saturday in Tucson the killing of innocents. Violence in America needs to be constantly looked at as a negative, not as entertainment.

Because of the author's reporting there were positive changes made in the military, and reading the reviews that were positive, the author has left a positive print on our lives, too. Thank you for writing this, and keep up the great writing and informing us of the facts.

Summary of Under the Sabers: The Unwritten Code of Army Wives

Under the Sabers is a groundbreaking narrative detailing the complex personal challenges Army wives face, presenting a provocative new look at Army life. Tanya Biank goes beyond the sound bites and photo ops of military life and shows what it is really like to be an Army wife--from hauling furniture off the rental truck by yourself at a new duty station when your husband is in the field, to comforting your son who wants his dad home from Afghanistan for his fifth birthday--she takes readers into the hearts and homes of today's military wives.

In the summer of 2002, Army wives were in the headlines after Biank, a military reporter for the Fayetteville Observer, made international news when she broke the story about four Army wives who were brutally murdered by their husbands in the span of six weeks at Fort Bragg, an Army post that is home to the Green Berets, Airborne paratroopers, and Delta Force commandos. By that autumn, Biank, an Army brat herself, realized the still untold story of Army wives lay in the ashes of that tragic and sensationalized summer. She knew the truth--wives were the backbone of the Army. They were strong--not helpless--and deserved more than the sugarcoating that often accompanied their stories in the media.

Under the Sabers tells the story of four typical Army wives, who, in a flash, find themselves neck-deep in extraordinary circumstances that ultimately force them to redefine who they are as women and Army wives. In this fascinating and meticulously researched account, Biank takes the reader past the Army's gates, where everyone has a role to play, rules are followed, discipline is expected, perfection praised, and perception often overrides reality. Biank explores what happens when real life collides with Army convention.

Biank describes what it means to be a wife and mother in a subculture that is in a constant state of readiness for war. In this hard-hitting and powerful book, Biank takes a close look at the other woman--the Army itself--and its impact on wives, marriages, and home life. This story of strength and perseverance is an eye-opener for those who have never experienced military life and an anthem to those women who each day live the "unwritten code."
