Book Reviews of Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight LossBook Review: Excellent, intelligent reading about nutrition Summary: 5 Stars
In addition to the information contained in Mark Hyman's book, I would add this to all readers interested in nutrition: stop consuming ALL, and I mean ALL, polyunsaturated oils: corn oil, soybean oil, peanut oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, etc. Read the labels of all processed foods you buy and discard any (be advised, this will mean the majority) containing polyunsaturated oils. Buy only products that contain butter, extra virgin olive oil, non hydrogenated coconut oil or non hydrogenated palm oil.
Buy and eat organic coconut oil (available in the health section of most stores) and organic butter, include a little olive oil, that's it for the fats.
Buy organic veggies and fruits, prepare your own food, avoid processed foods as much as you can.
Drink water. When you drink Coca Cola or any processed drink, think tons of sugar or worse, high fructose corn syrup, going into your bloodstream.
Read Mary Enig very informative book: EAT FAT LOSE FAT and Bruce Fife's THE COCONUT OIL MIRACLE, to learn more about polyunsaturated, monounsaturated and saturated fats. Both books clearly explained the myth of the "good" polyunsaturated fats (the bad guys) and the "bad" saturated fats (the good guys) that sprang in the 50s to the misfortune of America and the rest of the world.
Think this way about the money you spend on food: eat the right food and your health problems will diminish. So will your medical bills. Isn't it wiser to prevent than to cure? By now, most of us believe that quitting smoking reduces the chance of getting lung cancer. Well, it's the same thing with food on a grander scale. When you quit eating junk, processed, sugary, and especially fried foods, you reduce the chance of getting all kinds of nasty diseases.
Anyone wondering about the rising number of people affected by obesity, diabetes, heart attack, asthma, you name it? Think POLYUNSATURATES. Humans evolved eating mostly saturated fats.
As far as meat is concerned, human beings were simply not meant to eat meat. The length of our intestines is testimony enough. Carnivores have short intestines, the meat they eat is processed in just a few hours. Not so in human beings where food takes up to 3 days to leave our bodies. Three days at 98+ degrees means meat putrefies in your intestines and releases all kinds of nasty toxins in your bloodstream. If you do eat meat, at the very least do yourself a favor: eat organic meat. Still not convinced? Ever seen lions barbecue their meat? Or better still: when you are hungry, have you ever looked at a cow in the pasture and been tempted to kill it and tear at its raw flesh right on the spot as most carnivores do? No, of course. We need to cook it, and some cook it so there is not a drop of blood left. Carnivores eat raw meat. We are not carnivores. We can't eat raw meat because it contains pathogens and parasites that would make us sick.
We can however eat fish as long as it is wild fish. When you eat farmed fish, think trouble.
One last thing. If exercise doesn't make you lose weight, your body will nonetheless greatly benefit from it. Walking at a sustained pace is not as demanding on the body as jogging, but equally effective. Humans were not meant to live a sedentary life and it is not advisable to sit in front of the TV or the computer for hours on end eating potato chips (or whatever it is people snack on these days).
Often, when I discuss nutrition with other people, I hear that "we all die of something" (meaning they are not going to modify their diet even if it means saving their life). Personally, I intend to live a healthy life as long as possible and not to die from some dreadful degenerative disease that would take away the joy of living. But it's just me.
I think that ULTRAMETABOLISM is a well written, intelligent and remarkably educated book.
My husband is a nutritionist.
I am French (and yes, not burdened by weight problems even after 10 years in the United States).

But a medical revolution is under way, showing us how to work with our bodies instead of against them to ignite the natural fat-burning furnaces that lie dormant within us. Drawing on the cutting-edge science of nutrigenomics -- how food talks to our genes -- Dr. Mark Hyman has created a way of losing weight by eating the right foods, which in turn sends the right messages to our bodies. In this easy-to-follow eight-week plan based on each individual's unique genetic needs, Dr. Hyman explains how to customize your personal weight-loss program with menus, recipes, shopping lists, and recommendations for supplements and exercise.
