Book Reviews of Ultra Black Hair Growth II 2000 Edition

Book Review: Ultra Black Hair Works!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased Ms. Howse's book about two years ago. I had a devastating relaxer done professionally (6 months before the book) that left my hair falling out like pine needles. My hair became extremely thin, especially at the crown, and just broke off if I looked at it the wrong way! LOL (Though I was not laughing then) I had to cut my shoulder length hair into a pixie cut above my ears, thinking this would help stem the breakage. I think it got worse.

I then went to an "experienced" stylist I trusted who nursed my hair back to health. Basically, I needed to re-grow an entire head of hair. However, after some months, though my hair had filled back in some, the length was not returning. Instead, the stylist just kept cutting, and cutting explaining that cutting helps the hair grow. Little did I know! So I decided to research a new hair routine and read all of the black hair care books I could find. I tired them, and neither worked so immediately at stopping the breakage as Ms. Howse's methods. I liked her common sense approach, and yes, I gained those 6 inches of hair in a year.

Then, I got lazy, assuming I could wash my hair a little less, wear my hair out more didn't moisturize as prescribed in the book. Within a couple of months, all of that beautiful grown was gone and my hair was thinning. Needless to say, I went back to the Ultra Black Hair method, and my hair is thicker than it has been in years and grows very well. This is amazing because I have the driest, coarsest, wiry-est, nightmare-to-style hair of anyone I know. Like steel wool, it's actually pierced my skin in the past! If it works for my hair, then it must be a good thing!

The book is a practical manual for women and the products are great. Do you have to use them? Of course not. However, I found that similar, quality products I've thoroughly researched and purchased at salons cost much more than Ms. Howse's. Ultra Black Hair works.

Book Review: NOW BLACK WOMEN CAN HAVE LONG HAIR TOO!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was online typing keywords into Google, and one of the keywords I typed was Growth, Black, Hair. I figured at least the Internet would have some type of information on the subject. Lo and behold it was a number of sites about growing black hair. My hair is 12 inches long (which is a meduim length, happy about that) and is relaxed. But I have broken hair at the edges and the back, for the most part my hair is thick and healthy (genetics), but it has never grown past shoulder length and I wanted to change that. I too want long flowing hair to the middle of my back like white women, Asian women, Spanish women and any other culture besides African-American women. I stumbled upon Cathy's site and fell in love with it. It was so informative on the care of our hair. I said she must not be a crock because she was giving extensive information and hair care tips on her site for free without having to purchase her book. I could of simply took the tips and kept going without spending a dime. But I dediced to buy the book and the products that same day! My order came to around $50.00 for the three hair care products plus the book but it was the best $50 I ever spent. We as black women spend $150 on braids and weaves to get a temporary look of having long hair but as we all find out, it is only temporary. After three weeks it's time to retouch up that weave and those micro-braids (another $50-$60). Doing this can cause us to spend about $200 monthly just on our hair! Do you know what we can buy with $200 extra a month? That new pocketbook or shoes or take our kids on a mini-trip. Anything other than making somebody else rich off of our hard earned money. Listen, buy the book, purchase the products and be patient enough to grow your own hair. Yes it takes time but think about it would you rather waste $2400.00 a year on fake hair that doesn't last or would you rather spend $300 on your own real hair. Think about it!

Book Review: More black women need to read this book
Summary: 5 Stars

I have never really had any serious problems with my hair like going bald or fall-out or extreme breakage, however I have experienced breakage and dryness throughout my years of taking care of my hair. All my life I have had thick shoulder length hair and when I went to college, with the hard water and "in hairstyles" I started to realize that I was no longer taking care of my hair properly. First off, I wacked it down to about an inch all over and shaved in the back, ear down. I loved the cut and in a sense wanted to start over, fresh. I had to do something so I started doing the things my mom used to do, wash it with products for dry hair, detangle while wet, etc. My hair started growing again, but the same way you learn as you go, you can always learn more. Then I got on the internet and started searching. I found ubh publications and decided to order Mrs. Howse's book. The book was not expensive so what did I have to lose. I am so glad I bought the book, not only did it reinforce what I already knew but it gave me a positive outlook as to what my hair can look like if I keep doing the things that I have been doing (consistently). In about 2 more years my hair will probably be down to my waist! (It is a little past shoulder length now, layered) I have no problem in wacking my hair off and sporting a "Halle Berry", or "Toni Braxton in the old days" cut but now I know that I don't HAVE to have short hair. It's a decision YOU make. You can let it grow and take care of it, or cut it off and take care of it. Black women let's do our research on the hair care industry and stop abusing our hair with all these products and curling irons and blow dryers (all the time, sometimes is okay). Let's grow some long hair so we can throw it behind our shoulders and let it blow in the wind, I am on my way! God Bless everyone!

I searched on the internet under dry hair after trying everything and any advice. I have two girls 7 and 9. The 9 year old blessed with fine hair which is manageable but the 7 year old like me needed a miracle for dry, itchy scalp and breaking hair. I came across Cathy Howse website. I read it inside out and decided to try it. I thought too it was a little pricey but when I compared it to what I was giving the salon every two weeks, it actually was a lot cheaper for alot more hairdo's. I have followed her program using her products. Some people have different complaints about her, but thats whats wrong with our community, always looking for something for nothing. A hand out. Since I have started using her products(just a few weeks)I have gotton compliments from friends, family and co-workers who ask me what have I changed. Most think its the hairdresser. My stylist, a girlfriend, even had to admit that my hair was fuller and healthier. The book gave me info. I needed that is not common. It definitely helped to know to shampoo twice a week, minimum once a week instead of the myth of two to three weeks and that frequent shampooing drys the hair out of it's natural oils. I found out my scalp was itchy and terrible, not because of scalp condition. It was dirty! Then I added grease and oil to the dirt trying to sooth the scalp. My daughters even commented how they have seen change with their soft and healthier hair. Cathy Howse is to the point and doesn't sugar coat. For all the sensitive people, I know kindness goes a long way but when you form bad habits over a period of time, telling you once nicely and that's it doesn't help to break the habit. I will continue to use the products and info. given as this is the only one I have seen to work as of yet. Get the book and try it before you knock it. Thank you Cathy!!!!

Book Review: The RESPONSE TO THESE OTHER REPONSES
Summary: 5 Stars

Well, first of all, I would like to say is that I read the book myself, despite some negative feedback from readers. Although, I gave the book a 5-star rating(I enjoyed it), I would REALLY give it a three. In my opinion,
GOOD THING:I think Ms. Howse did a great job on desrcribing what our hair needs and certain ingredients we should look for but(BAD THING) I don't think she listed enough ingredients.
BAD THING:I felt that she sometimes would contradict herself. (I don't have the book with me as a ref.).
GOOD THING:Alot of people were actually looking forward for her to list the products she uses but she didn't and I think it's good that she didn't. The products that she uses may not go with my hair or some other's person hair. We respond to the same thing, differently.
BAD THING:Another thing that I disagree with her is that she thinks hairbrushes breaks the hair. I don't think so. MAybe it damaged her hair but it may not damage mine(if I use it properly)....also mentions using the curling iron as a straightner....a flat iron on low heat seating will suit me fine, especially for the roots...but otherwise than that,
I like her book and I learned some few things, like deep conditioning every week and keeping the ends in good health.
I READ some OTHER REPONSES AND I DON'T THINK PEOPLE SHOULD TRY TO MANIPULATE OTHER PEOPLE INTO NOT BUYING THE BOOK BECAUSE A MAN'S GARBAGE MAY BE ANOTHER MAN'S TREASURE. THE BOOK DIDN'T FIT OTHER PEOPLE BUT OTHER PEOPLE MAY LOVE THIS BOOK. AND WHAT IF THE PERSON LOVED THE BOOK SO MUCH THAT they SAY TO BUY THE BOOK? PEOPLE SHOULDN'T DO THAT BECAUSE IF other PEOPLE LISTEN TO THAT, BUY THE BOOK, it's a possibility they MAY END UP NOT LIKING the book...but anyway...i ordered her black conditioner, and i hope it's what I am expecting...peace people.
