Book Reviews of Ultra Black Hair Growth II 2000 EditionBook Review: Very Informative Book Summary: 5 Stars
I am so glad that somebody finally decided to do some research on black hair!! You would think a book like this would have came out a long time ago (I mean if we know how to fly to the moon, surely we should know how to grow black hair). I've tried so many products to try to get my hair to grow, but they all failed. I thought my hair didn't grow, so I wore braid for about seven months just to see what would happen. My hair grew about 3 and 1/2 inches, so I knew it could grow. Afer reading this book, I discovered why I wasn't getting the length I wanted without wearing braids. Also, the methods she has for caring for our black hair is very practical. Many myths about our hair are clarified in this book. I've read some of the reviews already, and there was a lot of critism about how Ms. Howse is using the book to advertise her products. If you think about it, how else is she supposed to advertise her products for a low price. The book is still in its beginning stages and advertising by book is a more efficient way of marketing. I believe this is very smart of Ms. Howse. This is not to mention that her products really works. If you choose not to get any of her products, you must get the conditioner. Yes I know it's more expensive than most conditioners, but you get what you pay for. We as black women spend $30, $40, and $50 for hair doos that last for a few days, and in many cases is not helping the condition of our hair. I've been using the conditioner for a couple of weeks, and I see a dramatic chnge in my hair. It's stronger and more healthy looking. When I comb my hair, I only have 3 or 4 strands of hair on the comb after I'm finished styling. Before I used the conditioner, I had so much hair on my comb and on the back of my shirt after I was finished styling my hair. And I thought that was normal! Its not! I would encourage any black women who wants to grow her hair and not wear braids to do so, to read this book. Additionally, the author has long hair, and follows her own advice she has in her book. She must be doing something right if she has all that hair! Isn't it interesting to see how so many black hairdressers tell us how to grow hair, and most of them don't even have long hair? How would they even know how to grow hair if they don't have it. I will write another review next year to tell you if my hair grew six inches longer. Good luck!
Book Review: Excellent Book on Hair Care Summary: 5 Stars
Cathy Howse wrote this book when there were no hair care books or forums dealing with hair care to be found. This book is excellent because it reminds us of something very important: having common sense when dealing with your hair.
Cathy Howse also has a website dedicated to hair care, www.ubhpublications.com. Cathy is not a hair stylist, may have criticised her for this, but I think this book HAD to be written by someone who was not in the industry. She does; however, have several awards to her credit, proving this book is effective.
Cathy talks about not trimming your ends. Let's get something straight once and for all. Cathy NEVER said you shouldn't trim your ends under any circimstances. She says that you do not need to trim your ends to make your hair grow. Cathy trims her hair to even out her length and she says you should trim your hair if it is damaged. She also shows her ends untrimmed to prove that whether or not your hair has split ends, your hair will grow.
Concerning her products, yes, she does talk about her products quite a bit. SHe says that her products are the only products that have all the elements you need in a conditioner. At the time, that was very true. If you want alternatives, there are products that do a great job at conditioning the hair. She really does not force the reader to buy her products. Since this is her book and her products, I think she is certainly entitled to mention them. You will find that there are many people who do this.
Cathy's criticism of the critics and hairstylists was, I felt, appropriate. She challenges the industry's myths and she does so tastefully. She supports her critique with many examples to the contrary.
Concerning her advice, I think it was effective. There were some alterations I had to make because I have natural hair and I find that natural hair has slightly different care requirements, but overall her advice was excellent for the beginner. I find that as a natural hair wearer, it is essential for me to keep my hair braided or in and "updo" of some sort. Wearing my hair "out" leaves it prone to dryness and breakage. I also did not like the "Dew"--it was just as effective as putting water on my hair, which is not what my hair needs.
Book Review: A Diagnosis and Prognosis To Help U Get Back 2 Basics Summary: 5 Stars
Before I purchased the Book by Cathy Howse I did what every other curious consumer would do,I read the reviews of her book by many. I must admit I was not impressed and I quickly became skeptical on whether or not it was worth my money and time. (...) I Hit The Jackpot!!! This books is well written, contains essential information on proper ingredeints to look for and avoid, proper vitamins, moisturizers, tools best suitable for your hair, and how to maintain healthy hair from this point. That's right this point only. For all of you searching for a miracle; Please look elswhere. But for those of you ready to step up and take some of the responsibility on why your hair is not manageable, damaged by overuse of chemicals, curling irons,etc.. "This is the only Book On the Market" Let's Face it, We have not been naively led down some conspiracy road by the salon and hair industries, We just never asked? That's right we never inquired about ways to maintain the healthy look or healthiness of our hair. Instead we expected the stylist( who has a mortagage, car payments, childcare etc..) to encourage us to take practical steps to maintain our hair at home. Why would they? Who else is going to make a weekly payment to their lifestlyes. Don't misread me I am not against the hair industry or salons. I'm dissappointed that they neglected to inform me and provide me with alternatives. Of course if what they were telling me were positive ways to take care of my hair, I would spend even more with them. The reason why Is simple. At anytime I was unable or did not have the time to do my own hair I would trust the person who thought enough about me to be honest not someone who just wanted to take my money. I say Buy this book and get back to the basics of simplicity, health, knowledge, realism and most of all RESPONSIBILITY. Since I have purchased the conditioner my hair is stronger, healthier and the book has left me empowered and now I can communicate with any stylist on the planet about What is best for MY HAIR.
Book Review: Read this book if you can! Summary: 5 Stars
I do strongly recommend you read this book if you're of African descent and trying to grow out your hair. I hate to say this, but I feel people of other races mostly have hair that grows much faster than our own (the book doesn't focus on this and Cathy probably doesn't agree with this statement). However, we find ourselves practicing techniques that works for them. For example, trimming every 6 to 8 weeks? From what I read in a magazine, this is actually to maintain MEDIUM length hair which is easier to manage so that it doesn't grow long and unruly! Do you have hair that just grows so darn much it bothers you? This is just one example of when we're using solutions for a problem somebody else has. We needed research done on OUR OWN hair. Initially, I really felt some of her dispelling myths and ragging on professionals was harsh. But now I recommend you read her research based book to see what's the truth behind all the ridiculous or sometimes helpful advice our stylists and mothers have passed down over the years. This is not a miracle potion for hair growth. Some of the things you'll read, you've already heard before. I just think she puts the hair care system together beautifully to help us achieve length by keeping our ends on our head (don't forget your hair grows at the roots almost no matter what). I started out on her products but don't use them religiously anymore. But the information from the book? It's not going anywhere. I honestly don't know when next I'll get my hair trimmed. She strongly recommends getting your relaxer done professionally, but I don't want to go in and start fighting with someone about how and what to do to my hair. After reading her book and taking other advice as well with a grain of salt, I'll do my own hair at home. Don't forget you can also check this from your local library. I figure it would help in case you don't like the material. If you do like it, there's thousands of places you can purchase as a reference manual for yourself!
Book Review: A Blessing Summary: 5 Stars
After being at my wits end with my hair I ordered Cathy's book. I loved her hair advice. I can't understand why sisters would hate on her because she is trying to promote hair products. White companies do it everyday (commercials, magazines) and we run out and buy everything to make our hair grow with no results. The only negative she could have left out the book is negative talk about other authors. I skipped over that part. The book does contain a lot of gramatical errors, but I looked past that also. Just using the "common sense' techniques that she talks about has been a God send to me. I could never understand when I would go to the beauty parlor,my beautician would say how dry my hair was. I was so used to my hair being dry and brittle it was so common to me, that I didn't notice the difference. After using the conditioner recipe found on amazon and using her moisterizer I can truly see a difference in my hair. Before I got the book, I purchased some moisterizer from sallys and it's no comparison to her moisterizer. Sure it was a little expensive (shipping) but I have spent much more on other products with no suceess. I decided to give it a try.
What I like about the book is her common sense approach to caring for our hair. Her book teaches you how to be care for your own hair and not have to keep throwing your money away by paying a beautician and still have dry, brittle and not getting any growth results. After reading her book I learned that my hair couldn't be double processed relaxers and color. Before I got the book I had made up my mind anyway that since my hair was breaking off, I would stop going to the beauty parlor for a while and do my hair myself. I ran accross her books a couple of years ago and I didn't purchase it (being cheap) I wish I would have bought it then. It would have saving me a lot of heart aches and tears.
My best advice is don't knock it unless you'vd tried it. Four weeks in and I'm pleased with the results.
