Book Reviews of Ultra Black Hair Growth II 2000 Edition

Book Review: After the Bible no other book has influenced my life the way this one has!
Summary: 5 Stars

I first ordered this book in March 2006. I was tired of growing my hair and having continuous setbacks. I googled "hair growth without trimmming" and Cathy Howse's site was the first one to come up. I read what she had to say and tried her regimen. After 4 weeks I noticed a huge difference in the appearance of my hair.

After 7 months, I noticed a huge difference in the length of my hair. I had gained a little over three inches.

I have used her conditioner on and off, and as long as I stick to her regimen my hair continues to thrive, even without her products. I have basically had to unlearn everything I was taught regarding "black" hair. I am so thankful to Cathy, that I hand out her brochures whenever I get the chance.

Now here it is, 3 and a half years later, and even though I have had 3 major hair cuts due to heat damage, I still have more hair than I have ever had in my life! I have learned that I can't stray away from Cathy's guidelines, I pay by chopping inches of my hair off if I do. I have a love/hate relationship with blowdryers, and have recently banned them from my hair permanently. My ends get thin and damaged even if I only use a blowdryer a handful of times. Cathy warns against using direct heat in her book and goes into detail about what is happening to our hair when we use heat appliances too frequently.

All I know is that I shudder to think of what state my hair would be in if I was still

>relaxing every 4 weeks

>washing once a month

> greasing my scalp (haven't had ANY dandruff for 3+ years since I STOPPED greasing my scalp)

>blow drying my hair

>flat ironing or curling daily, sometimes twice a day if I was going somewhere after work!!!

>trimming every 3-5 weeks because (I thought) my hair would stop growing if I didn't

>parting my hair in 4 sections, and brushing it 100 strokes for growth every night before bed

I was KILLING my hair and working against it, instead of for it. I would have NO hair line left and my hair would be thin, weak, over processed and a general MESS if I hadn't stumbled across Cathy Howse's site. My eyes are filing with tears as I type this. I never in my wildest dreams would've thought my hair could get this long. I was always told that only mixed girls and everyone else BUT Black women could grow their hair to great lengths. Well, Cathy said otherwise and she definitely got my attention! I am so glad that I gave her a chance, and that I found her site before I discovered the many lies and scams that are out there. Cathy is the real deal and I thank God for her. I will continue to tell every black woman I come into contact with about Cathy! This lady is a God send! As far as I am concerned this book is well worth the 10 bucks. Her products, but not needed ! Her simple, clear cut regimen stands alone!

Book Review: This is for sister with common sense
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using Cathy's program since June of 2003. My hair was just at my ear when I started, it is now November and my hair is touching my shoulders and is the healthest my hair has ever been. My story is like most sisters my hair would break off before it would get to the lenth that I want, or it would thin out if it did get to the lenth (rarely), and who wants long see through hair? Out of frustration I wore braids for over a year. But I wanted to wear my own hair, when I found the program and thought I'd give it a shot. My hair was natural when I took the braids down to my horror I had not been protecting my hair I had damage it beyond belif,(I had synthetic hair not natural and it dried out my hair completly) the texture of my hair was that of matted dolls hair, and that's an insult to the dolls hair. The older part of the hair would not take the relaxer, my hairdresser had to apply it 3 times to get any change in texture, the whole time I'm praying that my hair would not melt away. Still my shoulder lenth hair had to be cut to just at my ear. Fortanatly I had Cathy's book and I followed her advice to the letter, amazingly with 3 application of relaxer at 1 sitting NO BREAKAGE!!! only natural hair shedding. I am no longer afraid of relaxers I did not exspect to enjoy the process of growing my hair out , as much as the end result, but I do. I don't understand why some of the reviewers have such a negative mindset on this book, it really seems like their nitpicking at every minute insignificant straw that they can grasp at. Well it's their loss I hope any who is looking at this review will take the time to think for themselves and really look at what these people are griping about...nothing. Also one reviewer who critizes Cathy for promoting her hair conditioner, I wonder did it ever dawn on her that there really isn't another conditioner on the market that was developed for the benifit and needs of BLACK HAIR as describe in the book. Or give credit to someone who did not sit on the sidelines an whine but did something about it. I did take the time to search the market myself and if you want the garbage that companies are promoting to take our money because THEY KNOW we want long hair but they don't want to do anything about it, That is your choice. And why don't the big companies make stuff that actually works for our hair? Because you make more money treating the problem instead of curing it. And that crap that they are selling doesn't even treat it we are just in the dark and desperate for anything that may work. The cure will come from you. Once you have the knowlege no one can ever take it away.

Book Review: Ultra Black Hair Growth II 2000 Edition
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great book with a well-explained hair care approach for those of us who have long hair and want to keep it or want long hair and want to know how to care for what we have. I wish I knew this book existed a decade ago! Think of the hair that I would have maintained and still have today-but my circle to pool information from consisted of the group of people that believe in "cutting the hair makes it grow" philosophy. You'll learn why cutting the hair to grow more hair is a false belief. Years before reading any of Cathy's books, I tried to stop cutting my hair so that it could grow - but I was so inundated with the false philosophy about cutting to grow (and having a mom) who is a beautician didn't help. Cathy's book gives you details in care so that you have assurance that you are not alone and that you too can have long hair.

You'll find a tried and true experience related as Cathy Howse tells you of her hair care approach working not only for her but also others.

I purchased the prior book (1994) in early 2000, but I was curious about "Ultra Black Hair Growth II (2000 edition)" because I wanted to see what other nuggets of information were included.

I was curious if information on alternative hair relaxer was included. If you are looking for information on the Naturalaxer by African Wonders - you won't find that. However, Rio and COPA are discussed some, as well as other hair care approaches I wasn't aware existed. So I think I have more information to have a better basis for asking questions regarding any other alternative relaxer. I like the explanations in this book as well as I did with the prior book because you are given an understanding of how a chemical relaxer works/what the relaxer does to achieve the relaxed hair. Though Cathy doesn't say which chemical relaxer she is using, she expresses she is happy with it and therefore, has no desire to try the alternative type relaxers that companies have made. I find that admirable.

If you don't have a hair care book by Cathy, this latest book is the one for you. If you have a previous Ultra Black Hair Growth II book, you may still want to do as I did - Get the book out of curiosity as a refresher knowing you have updated information. I didn't find any of the principles suggested in the previous book removed from the 2000 book, AND I am not displeased that I purchased Ultra Black Hair Growth II (2000 edition). I think it is worth the dollars.

Book Review: Truth v. Lying Reviews
Summary: 5 Stars

I finished reading the book within 3 hours and it is well worth spending the money and gives sound advice. Before purchasing the book, I went to her website www.ubhpublications.com and read Cathy's tips and began to implement them. It is now approximately 4 weeks and there is an approvement in the quality of my hair and there is minimal breakage. People never like to revert from old ways and practices: "GET OVER IT--OUR MOTHER'S GENERATION WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL AT HELPING US WITH OUR HAIR. SO TRY SOMETHING NEW." We can have long hair and not be bi-racial, White, Hispanic or Asian with proper care. Cathy mentions her products litely--i had expected from reading all the reviews to see her announce it every page. Also, prior to purchasing the book, I spent 3 days for 12-17 hours combing through all the information on the web about black hair and I found that her book measured up and was not some fiction book. There are articles on websites like AOL's Black Voices, healthy textures blogs, and a simple google search would shut up the dumb critics. AFTER READING THE BOOK, DOING IS THE ONLY THING THAT IS GOING TO WORK. IT IS LIKE STUDYING FOR A MAJOR EXAM IN COLLEGE--STARING AT THE BOOK, NOT GOING TO CLASS OR FAMILIARIZING YOURSELF WITH THE MATERIAL--WILL NOT HELP YOU GET AN A+++. YOU MUST ACTUALLY DO SOME WORK TO RECEIVE A PASSING GRADE. Hair takes patience I am happy and will check in with my hair in a year. I remember every four years I would grow my hair out to Arm Pit Length and it would break off even after following some of the wrong tips by the hairdressers. December 2007 was the last straw when my long hair became a bob up to my ears all for cutting your hair makes it grow. Most hairdressers have specialized in dressing up damaged hair and capitialized on charging more while delivering mediocore services. She is not knocking them--she is telling our generation to do something that most people don't--examine their ways how has it helped your hair--clogging your pores with bad materials, etc. Additionally, it has been hinted in the reviews that she does not agree with vitamins--i have not found that to be true--she encourages you to use them but you must implement hair care. BUY THE BOOK!!! I am not going to purchase her products because there are products out there that do the same job--I am on a budget. However, I am going to keep implementing her practices and good bye to severe breakage, weak hair and hello to healthy hair.

Book Review: MYTHS DISPELLED!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read the other reviews with great interest and I have come to the conclusion that you can't please everyone. However, I noticed that there were references to other books about black hair, specifically the Shamboosie book. I don't know Cathy Howse, but as a black scientist and a physician
I do know that there were NO SHAMBOOSIES or Bamboosies 15 years ago who were writing intelligent guidelines to care for the hair of black women.

CATHY HOWSE is the FIRST author to seriously address and dispel the myths and the subculture attitudes of black hair grooming and growing. The other epigones are too late as far as I am concerned.

I have had professional hairstylists and hairdressers "take care" of my hair all my adolescent and adult life. I was so afraid to wash it by myself. I just scurried off to the hairdresser once or twice a week; had relaxers placed according to THEIR schedules and followed their "advice" to the letter. After all, they were "professionals". Yet, my hair remained less than 3 inches in length. That is, until I happened to stumble on to Cathy's book on Amazon.com this past August. The book literally CHANGED MY LIFE!!! It has become my bible and my daily guide. Her website is also awesome. There are many questions that she answers on her website that do not appear in the book (www.ubhpublications.com). I have ordered her products and the products of others, including Dudley, Motions and Pantene. Believe me, her products are FAR SUPERIOR than those offered by the other hair companies. She really has done her homework!! Some may find them expensive, but, "you get what you pay for". The only question that should be asked is, "Does this product promote the healthy growth of my hair?" If the answer is yes, then buy it!

I have always been driven by "evidence-based" science, not by hearsay. That's why I always went to a professional stylist. Well, those days are over. Now, I am confident enought to take care of my own hair now and I dictate to the hairdresser what I want and what I don't want.

Cathy is a Godsend and all the naysayers should be aware of the fact that SHE was the first person who put her experiences in writing from which we black women can benefit. For that alone, she should be given a medal.

My "exp-hair-iment" is proceeding quite nicely and I owe it all to Cathy Howse.
