Book Review: Honestly Works

I read Cathy Howse's book about 5 years ago and began following her regimen. My hair health and length immediately improved, although my hair wasn't damaged that badly and was already shoulder length. Most of her tips were things I was either aware of or already doing, for example moisturizing and conditioning. I think her emphasis on moisturizing EVERY day without exception and deep conditioning with heat EVERY single time you wash your hair are the important and priceless pointers. I bought both moisturizers she sells however once I ran out, I experienced the WORST breakage of my life. This may have been due to the braids I had put in, the fact that I moved and switched stylists, or my internal health - but whatever it was I was not pleased. Recently my cousin asked me about her regimen, remembering how extremely long my hair had grown while following it. I thought to myself "why did I ever stop using her products and following her regime?" and bought her dew and creme moisturizers. Immediately I noticed a vast improvement in my hair. I must say her moisturizers do EXACTLY what she claims they do - the conditioners I haven't tried. I totally agree with moisturizing every day, washing hair at least 1X per week, and deep conditiong everytime you wash your hair. I also began to air dry my hair whenever time permits which I thought was a helpful hint. The only thing Ms. Howse stresses that I don't totally ascribe to is the need to completely abolish the use of hair brushes. I do rely more on combs to style my hair but I did not notice that occasional and infrequent use of brushes for achieving smoothness in certain styles was damaging. I agree that most of the points can be obtained from the website, but it is nice to have them in an organized and very easy readable book. I do recommend the book.
