Book Review: Don't Waste Your Money!!

This book was a total waste of money for me. I was disappointed in this book for a number of reasons: it's very poorly written with many spelling and grammatical errors; too much of it is given to attacking the professional hair care industry (salons/stylists and product manufacturers alike); there is very little actual advice and no "step by step instruction" on how to actually take care of Afro-textured/Black hair; and too much repetition (which suggests to me that she really didn't have very much to say in the first place). There were many inconsistencies and contradictions in the book as well: She goes from 'Black hair should NEVER, EVER be brushed' to 'you may brush Black hair for styling purposes;' 'split ends do not affect hair growth and do not need to be trimmed' to 'it is necessary to trim split ends.' (These are not direct quotes from the book.)
It bothered me that the author used the book to hock her wares instead of proposing readily available products or at least suggesting some "homemade" recipes for products that would provide the benefits she insists that Afro-textured/Black hair "requires." The author says that Black hair requires a protein deep conditioner, oils for lubrication and a scalp stimulant, which the conditioner she manufactures contains. Since she neglected to provide any hint of this recipe, I guessed at it and my hypothesis was confirmed by another reviewer, Michelle from Denver--a protein conditioner, oils like coconut & olive oil, and an essential oil like peppermint.
Last but not least in my list of complaints (I could go on, but I'll stop here), there is absolutely no advice for those of us who wear our natural hair (i.e. napptural). There is a chapter on the use of styling appliances and a chapter on the use of chemicals. I don't use either. (At the beginning of the chapter on the use of chemicals, she says that if you don't use chemicals "you can skip this chapter." Well, duh!) The only advice she gives to naturals is to use the hair products she manufactures.
Again, I plead with you to not waste your time or your money with this book. If you insist on reading this book, you can have mine. I'll never pick it up again.
