Book Reviews of Tyrannosaur CanyonBook Review: Warning: may cause insomnia! Summary: 5 Stars
The only thing better than a Douglas Preston-Lincoln Child book is one written by either when they go on their respective solo adventures. In this case it's Preston's turn to churn out a book and he accomplished that and more. It was so good, let's just say I've seen his plot points recycled later in another medium.
Specifically, that would be the remake of The Andromeda Strain Miniseries, shown in 2008 on the A&E channel. In the movie, the Andromeda strain (virus) is protected in space on its journey to Earth through space by Bucky balls (a type of carbon impervious to anything). This is an all new plot thread in the movie that was never in the Crichton original book: Andromeda Strain. While watching the movie I thought it was a rather creative twist for such a horrible remake. Then I read Tyrannosaur Canyon.
****Spoilers*****
Now, keep in mind this book came out a couple years before this movie remake, and one of the book's plot points is a long-dormant virus protected by Bucky balls hurtling through space as a passenger on the asteroid that would wipe out the dinosaurs. In a nutshell, what the asteroid didn't kill, this now non-dormant virus killed off. Very ingenious, creative, and typical of any Preston novel.
Sadly, the movie The Andromeda Strain Miniseries basically stole this concept and incorporated it into the plot. Michael Crichton, if he were alive, would probably have nixed the whole mess.
The book, though, is anything but a mess. Well-crafted, with defined characters, a breakneck plot, and descriptive settings. This is in addition to mini-climaxes throughout the story, all leading to the "big one." He starts off the book with a moon rock being stolen, begins introducing the protagonists and antagonists, and you can't help but wonder how he's going to tie this all together. Oddly, he does and he does it effortlessly! He's like a word magician; while you're looking at the bunny in his right hand he's actually doing the real 'trick' in his left.
This is one adventure I almost didn't read as I thought it was a boring archaeology story, or worse, a non-fiction sleep-herder. Happy to say I was wrong and if you're assessment is the same, put it aside and get this book. My only complaint is that every time I start an action thriller like this I get very little sleep as I'm reading deep into the night! All his books should come with this warning: may cause insomnia.
