Book Reviews of Twilight: Director's Notebook: The Story of How We Made the Movie Based on the Novel by Stephenie MeyerBook Review: A personal and intimate look at the making of TWILIGHT. Must have for fans. Summary: 5 Stars
Twilight: Director's Notebook is an insightful and intimate look at the making of the movie from director Catherine Hardwicke's perspective. The book itself is like one of those hardbound diaries that you would find at your local bookstore - approx. 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches and 163 pages - it is compact enough to carry in a purse or bookbag, but packs quite a punch for its size.
Anyone who is a fan of "Twilight" the movie will enjoy this. The book itself 'reads' like a pocket size scrapbook. And with a scrapbook comes pictures, pictures, pictures...and this book has tons.
The Table of Contents itself are as follows:
- Introduction
- Inspiration (location scouting, cinematography, Forks, color palettes)
- Character Development (creating the characters, hair, make-up, costumes)
- Planning the Scene (interior set pieces like Charlie's house, the Cullen house, Forks High School)
- The Van Crush (details on creating the van accident scene)
- The Meadow (details on creating the meadow scenes)
- The Tree Tops (details on the tree top scenes with Bella and Edward)
- The Baseball Game (details on the Cullen baseball game)
- The Ballet Studio (details on the climactic ballet studio confrontation)
- Music (info on the score and artists that contributed to the soundtrack)
- Visual Effects (info on effects used)
- Misery (some of the filming challenges; ie. La Push, the prom)
- Twilight Mania
- Credits
My favorite sections are: Character Development, Planning a Scene (love the details on the "kissing scene"), The Meadow, The Tree Tops and Music (esp. the bit about Rob Pattinson's musical contributions).
Each page has loads of pictures and illustrations, with descriptions and comments from the author/director in her handwriting (which is actually neat and orderly, so I had no trouble reading it). It is very much like looking into her own personal notes in the making of the movie: the thought processes that went into how certain scenes were shot, how they arrived at each location, the palettes used for costumes or scenes, the set up of interior scenes (including floor plans), what inspired them, filming experiences, the weather situation, how each character was developed, how some of the major scenes/sets were shot, as well as loads of 'trivia' about the making of the movie.
How is this different from the Official Movie Companion you ask? The Movie Companion has more text than photos and looks at the filming from a 3rd persons point of view. The Directors Notebook has more photos/illustrations than text (hence, the scrapbook comparison) and has a more 'intimate' feel since it is written from the director's point-of-view. For instance, while the Movie Companion would TELL YOU the details of how a certain scene is filmed, the Director's Notebook will SHOW YOU how that scene was filmed through charts/story boards/illustrations/floor plans, etc. In short, you can have both books and feel that they actually 'complement' rather than 'compete' with each other. And if you're more of a visual person, then you will appreciate the wealth of pictures/drawings in the Director's Notebook.
If you are a fan of the movie and want to know more about the making of "Twilight," then this book is a must have. Any fan of Robert Pattinson or Kristen Stewart will also be pleased. While the other actors also have their share, this book clearly favors the two main leads. The Cullens, nomads and Jacob are all featured in the "Character Development" section and the Cullens and nomads are also covered in the "Baseball Game" section, as well as sprinklings in various sections. Catherine Hardwicke has a strong artistic and graphic design background, and it shows. It's a shame to think that this Director's Notebook effort may likely not be repeated when "New Moon," "Eclipse" or "Breaking Dawn" are made since this was clearly born from Catherine's artistic perspective. Nevertheless, I can only hope to see this effort repeated in future "Twilight saga" movies.
I agree with a previous reviewer that at $9.99 (Amazon price) or even $12.99 (other retailers), this book is a 'steal' for a Twilight fan. I highly recommend it, even if you already have the Official Movie Companion. It's an wonderful complement to other "behind the scenes" books or dvd featurettes. And for a Twilight fan like me, this is a definite must have.
