True to the Game
"As you struggle to hustle, taking gain after loss, don't get discouraged. Just remember whose boss. Handle your business, and always watch your back. Don't sleep on the stick-up boys waiting to attack. As you creep through the streets, the crack fiends holler. They've done any and everything just to give you those dollars. I hope it will last. I hope you make something of it. Time will tell if something good can come from it. But as you count the highs, count the lows too, and whatever you do, forever remain true. What choice do you have? It's in you by nature. Your only fault is...
Being a Player."
This is the `Game Anthem'. It was in the first page of the book. I think that the author put this in the book because; these are the things that Hustlers go through. I fell in love with this book. It's based on inner city crime in Philadelphia and drug dealing among the community. I liked it so much because it wasn't just about crime, but it was also about respect, and loyalty. I felt like I could relate to this book because I am from the inner city, I witnessed drug dealing and crime, first hand. The characters in this book had so much emotion; it's almost as if you were there. The lavish lifestyle and fast living is what really pulled me into the book. These characters lived there lives with no remorse or regrets. They lived fast, and had fun. Every day was a shopping spree. Me being the drama queen that I am, I fell face forward into the lives of these witty, and on the edge characters.
This book is based on inner city crime, drug dealing, and fast living. Young men grow up in poverty, and unfortunate, feel that in order to get those hundred dollar shoes, they must get them the fastest, and only way they know how. Drug dealing. Once they see how easy and fast the money is, they keep doing it, and eventually start selling more and more. They keep doing it because it's fast money, they work for themselves, and they think they will never get caught, or suffer any consequences. The men are the Hustler's, and the women are looking for the biggest Hustler. They want to live lavishly, so instead of working a 9-5. They scheme on the man with the most money. Eventually, they get comfortable spending other peoples money. They know that if they are with a big time Hustler, then they're big time too.
The main character `Quadir', a millionaire drug dealer, get's caught up living the fast life. Women are constantly trying to see him, and others are simply trying to be him. With all the drug money Quadir has accumulated, he has learned one thing. "Never trust anyone". Quadir reigns from the streets of Philly. Day in, and day out, he drives through the neighbor hoods collecting his money. He has a squad of young boys standing on every corner of the avenue. Quadir is also a bachelor. He has never loved or cared for anyone in his entire twenty-five years of existence, until he meets Gena at a party one night in Harlem. Gena is the other main character of the book. She's the smart, sexy, and witty eighteen year old, who loves to party and in her words, "Get her young life on." If you didn't hustle, then you weren't the man for Gena. She was so accustomed to the lavish lifestyle that her male companions provided her, that she just got comfortable with spending there money. She and her best friend Sahirah, would go to parties all over the east, and west cost, just to meet big time Hustlers and Players. After leaving her abusive boyfriend Jamal, Gena finds herself in the company of Quadir. Gena has never worked a job, because she always had a Hustler giving her money, or taking her on extravagant shopping sprees. When Gena meets Quadir, her best friend Sahirah brings to her attention that she hit the jackpot. Quadir takes Gena on expensive trips to Atlantic City, the Bahamas, and other exotic places. Along with that, come the shopping sprees. Quadir provides Gena with a lifestyle no other man in Philly could. Gena comes to terms with her self, and realize that she loves Quadir, and he also realizes the same. In there quest to be together, Quadir is ready to retire from Hustling, and live his life with Gena, and only Gena.
Only two things get in the way of Gena, and Quadirs happiness. The Junior mafia, and Cherelle, the mother of Quadirs daughter, that Gena doesn't know about. Gena knows that Quadir use to date Cherelle, and that he never cared for her. But what she doesn't know is that the baby was conceived when she and Quadir first started dating. Now Cherelle won't leave Quadir alone, she's constantly asking him for money, and she's constantly calling there home, and following them around. Quadir is afraid that Gena will find out about the baby, and leave him. Little does Quadir know that Gena's love for him runs deeper than he thinks. The other problem is the Junior Mafia. They started spreading cocaine through Philly like wild fire. The leader of the Junior Mafia, Jerrelle Jackson, is knocking down anyone he thinks is making more money than him, and his next target is Quadir, and his crew. Jerelle sends his squad to shoot up clubs, and parties that he knows Quadir and his crew will be at. Escaping with his life, and unconditional love for Gena, Quadir decides to retire from the Hustle. He realizes that he has all the money he will ever need, and as long as he has Gena, he won't need anything else. But is it too late.
Inner City drug dealing and crime is one of the main focuses of the book, along with two peoples love for one another. With every action, there is a reaction, and with all the drugs, and fast money, there is a consequence. There is only three ways to get out of the game, prison, death, and get legit, and walk away. Don't think that number three is as easy as it sounds, because in all actuality, it's the hardest. This book is about a Hustler, and his wife, the love they have for each other, and what they are willing to do to keep it. I liked this book so much, because I could really relate to some of the characters. I would strongly advise people who like to read about inner city crimes and things of that nature to read True to the Game.
