Book Review: Nice Book Summary: 5 Stars
This is a very nice photo book.
with a good quality of photos and a good quality of the printed paper.
Book Review: Amazing.. Summary: 5 Stars
....congratulations to Peter Beste, there is only one word to describe the work on this book, amazing.
Book Review: A little bit dissapointed Summary: 4 Stars
I was looking for this book as soon as I've seen Peter Beste's photos on the Internet, and my expectations were high. Very high.
First of all I was surprised about the book size. Not about the size in general but it's format: I think the pages are close to A3 size.
The binding and paper quality is very good, in my opinion, although it's printed and bind in China (this is the second edition of the book i'm speaking about).
My complain and the reason why I rated only 4 stars is the quality of the photographs; not the concept or subject of the photographs but the quality of the printed photograph. Beside the fact the huge format is not suitable for the photos (such a big format in a book is better of landscapes and high detail photos) the digitization of the photos is visible and annoying. Of course, i was thinking about the possibility of intended noisy grain on the photos so they can suit better the raw art of black metal, but there is a difference between grain and digital artefacts on the photos.
I have no idea who processed the photos but I was thinking at Peter Beste as a professional photographer who at least takes care how the photos are printed. If his intention was to create a photo correspondance of black metal music then I have to remind him that black metal means creating extreme music and a specific atmosphere by using low-fi instruments not using defective instruments.
As A final word, in Peter Beste's photos I can see sometimes how much of an outsider of black metal he is but all these photos can mean a lot for a black metal fan.
Book Review: Great images but the indexing could be better Summary: 4 Stars
I found this book to contain fascinating images of the black metal scene in Norway, a rich country that oddly, has more than its fair share of disenchanted and rebellious youth. As the author points out in the intro, if you were to rely solely on welfare in Norway, you'd still get around US$35,000 a year - not too shabby for doing nothing and being unemployed. And yet the country has a burgeoning death/black metal(it's the same to me) scene, full of unhappy, angst-riddled people who have completely rejected mainstream society and religion. Hard to understand but fascinating nonetheless.
My only gripe is that the photos are described at the end of the book numerically but the numbers don't appear on each page, thus making it difficult to figure out what or who is in the individual photos. But overall, a worthwhile buy for anyone interested in this genre of music.
