Book Reviews of Trainspotting

Book Review: don't mess your keks: its just heroin
Summary: 5 Stars

The fact that this is Irvine Welsh's first novel is completely amazing by itself. The fact that this book is well-written, interesting, and original only serves to augment the fact that Welsh is a talented writer. A lot of writers' first novels aren't so great, which is certainly not the case with Trainspotting. It gives an interesting story while making commentary on drugs and sex and friendship, something that most people can relate to. Welsh has created an interesting story that people will enjoy and relate to for a long time. And if you can't let the characters go, there's a sequel: Porno (of which I read about half. I didn't stop reading because of boredom and will definetly finish soon). Trainspotting is original, refreshing, and thoughtful and despite its gritty exterior, it definetly has more to say and offer besides just sex, drugs, and rock n roll.

Book Review: THERE IS A GLOSSARY IN THE BACK?!?!
Summary: 5 Stars

First, let all people interested in reading this novel know that, as the title of this review mentions, there IS a glossary in the back. I tell you this because I wish I knew this while I was reading the first half the book. Second, many people would rather not refer to a glossary while reading a book. I must urge you to step out of your element, otherwise you will miss out on an excellent novel. I've talked to some people that feel this book encourages drug use. I wonder if they have read the book? After seeing the lives these brothers and sisters lead, you'll never wanta touch the stuff. One chapther that particularly stands out is 'Bad Blood'. If you read nothing else in this book, go to your local book store or library and just read this chapter for it does not require any previous knowledge of the book...gives a brother chills.

Book Review: It's sickening...but I love it!
Summary: 5 Stars

The book is nauseating in some parts and incredibly arduous to read unless you read it aloud...But, man, it makes a deep impression. It delves into the world of Scotland, poor and economically screwed over (God I love my heritage!:) It's a sharp turn from what Americans are used to and on top of it...It's all druggies which adds a nice flavour to it...For the most part, the book is written in phonics the way Scottish persons speak which, as I said, makes it hard to read except aloud (or if you happen to have Ewan McGregors voice stored in your mind). In my opinion, the characters are classic and the story is an amazing piece of work. It's recommended for everyone save possibly for impressionable teens who might put the "heroic" drug soaked characters on a pedestal to emulate.

Book Review: Heroin addiction as high comedy
Summary: 5 Stars

Without doubt the funniest book you will ever read chronicling how life is for your average drug addict. I defy anybody not to laugh at the scene where the pit bull is shot in the testicles - the beautiful irony of the dog's neanderthal owner being attacked by his canine status symbol is too delicious to believe possible. As a warning against the evils of hard drugs the book is far more effective than telling children to "Just Say No". It should be compulsory reading for all teenage English Literature syllabuses (though I feel Mr. Welsh would object to it being described as 'English' Literature!) In addition, this is one of those rare occasions when a film does the book on which it is based true justice: Ewan McGregor and Robert Carlyle were born to play Renton and Begbie!!

Book Review: Differnt, brillant and makes you think, with humor.
Summary: 5 Stars

This book invaded Britian like Pulp Fiction did America, and anyoe reading it can easily figure out why. This group of quick short storys that connect and relate to each other will make you laugh out loud at its daringly digusting humor, and also gets quiet sad at points. In an unknown worl of junkies and rude boys, the reader will get to know the charaters, and hate them, or love them. What makes this book so differnt from everyother failed book on the same subject? Its divided into short storys, with the view changing from one person, to another, and then narator. Everyone who read it agrees that its a well done peice of work from a great new author, and I will certainly look in to other writings of Irvine Welsh, but they have a lot to live up to.
