Book Reviews of Trainspotting

Book Review: An novel of pure genious.
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first saw the film Trainspotting I was blown away by one of the funniest and most creative films I had seen since Pulp Fiction. When I discovered there was a book behind this remarkable film, I was determend to read it. Borrowing my sister's copy, I spent about a month going through this book's 345 pages (it didn't take so long out of boredom, I'm just a slow reader), and I ended up with only one conclusion...I HAD JUST READ ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS EVER!! Trainspotting is a hilarious, violent, and even sickening book that takes us into and below the lives of a group of junkies in Edinburgh, Scotland. It takes us into the minds and emotions of several characters, all who at one point in time act as narrator. The book is about heroin, sex, fighting, dead people, almost dead people, stealing, cheating, but most importantly, friendship (or lack of). It is a truly remarkable book which, as "Reble, Inc." says, "deserves to sell more copies than the Bible."

Book Review: THE BEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN!
Summary: 5 Stars

In Trainspotting, Irvine Welsh explores the lives of several heroin-addicted friends from Scotland. There's Rent Boy, the main MAIN character. He's just your ordinary junkie. Then there's Sick Boy. He's a junky pimp. Spud is another ordinary junky. Bebgie, grrrrrrr, I hate Begbie. He's an a$$hole. There are several more peeps, but I don't have enough time to talk about em. This book tells about their lives, the things they do to score drugs, women, everything. Irvine Welsh spares no expense.

This is Irvine Welsh's first book, and I can't decide whether this or Filth is his best. This one was a little harder for me to read because it is written in a total Scottish accent, using the slang and everything, and it took me a little while to get used to. I almost quit reading it, but now I'm glad that I didn't. It has a glossary in the back and after you read it for a while, you kinda get used to it. This book is probably the best book I have ever had the immense pleasure to read.

Book Review: Like spotting a train, then getting hit by it
Summary: 5 Stars

Love this book! Probably the first twenty pages are the roughest in terms of acclimating yourself to the dialect--which is unfortunate, because some really great stuff happens right up front. Overall, you'll be shocked. You'll be disgusted. You'll be depressed. But you'll leave redeemed and really knowing all of the characters and feeling like you've gone a few paces in their Docs. The novel definitely smacks (excuse the pun, it just popped out) of A Clockwork Orange, in many respects. Not a bad benchmark. Definitely a can't put it down kind of book. I was hooked from the getgo. Saw the movine the day I finished the book, and while seeingthe characters and situations come to life on-screen was interesting, someone who only sees the film will be missing 90% of Trainspotting. Don't get me wrong, see the film, but read the book first. Anyway, enough about the film. Go get the book, pop open a Guiness, put on some Iggy Pop, then take a quick read through the glossary and dive in

Book Review: Life, skag, and the people around it....
Summary: 5 Stars

What an abosolute delight from Welsh. I think the movie didn't do it justice at all. Trainspotting had a distinct vibe throughout the whole book. It had a sense of anarchy, distortion, and a little bit of righteous sense. The characters had excellent personalities and attributes. All of them were diverse in their own way, but most of them shared something in common, skag(heroin). It's quite a shame that I saw the movie before I read the book. I think the movie simply just summarized the book in a short method and changed some scenarios. Also, it took me about an hour just to get used to the dialog but that's just another reason why the book is outstanding. Welsh actually wrote it from a prospective of a person. Trainspotting is now one of my favorite books. I recommend this to everyone or to the ones that want to read about reality through the point of view of an addict.

Book Review: Strangely Fascinated...
Summary: 5 Stars

I finished Trainspotting five minutes ago and it was a heartache to close the book after having absorbed so many emotions from it. I searched for it because I had heard only a little about it with the exception of a few famous people reading it. Due to my vanity, I had to read it. A friend bought it for me and as soon as I started, I was blown away by the dialect and slang used. Once I got over the initial intimidation, I dove headfirst into an incredible book. Although this isn't my usual read, (I'm a huge W. Gibson fan), I found myself absolutely captivated by Welsh's characters. I think of him as a fabulous storyteller who captured the epitome of the tragedy of being young. I applaud him for showing that we do indeed have remorse for what we do. But we also have a love/hate relationship for this world. Read Trainspotting. It was indescribably beautiful.
