Book Reviews of Tough As Nails: One Woman's Journey through West PointBook Review: Thanks Gail Summary: 5 Stars
Let me add my endorsement of this fun read! I just zipped through it this weekend and had a great time. As a classmate and longtime admirer of Gail -- (and her husband Steve!) I came away more impressed with her dedication and prouder of her service to us all.
From the early days in basic training (Beast Barracks) with 7th Company (Hellfire and Brimstone, Sir!) through a lot of the trials and tribulations we all faced -- I cannot imagine that you won't be flooded with countless images of what it might be like to be a cadet in the early days with women at the Point. A grad, a wife and now a mom of two West Point grads -- Gail has a unique perspective to share.
As Gail points out -- it would have been great to be as smart as we are now -- back then. The lessons of leadership would have made so much more sense with our current perspective on life and people. We all found our way to and through West Point -- and this book reminds those of us who served with her, why. For those who have not -- Gail provides a glimpse into the transformation of young, willing new cadets determined to merely survive all of the rigors and who then one day awake and find that they have fully internalized the Academy motto of Duty, Honor, Country.
Those of us who know Gail will recognize her wit and drive and hear that sweet Red Sox lovin' accent -- and those who only know her through her book will now feel like they were best friends.
Gail -- I know you wrote this for yourself and your family -- but thanks for taking the time to write this for us all.
Summary of Tough As Nails: One Woman's Journey through West PointTough as Nails is one woman's account of her personal experiences and the lessons learned from them; it is how West Point engraved Duty, Honor, and Country onto her soul. Tough as Nails gives you the West Point experience. You'll see it, feel it and learn something from it. You'll smile and you'll laugh. This is the story that Erma Bombeck would have written had she been a member of the Class of 1981, the second class with women at WestPoint.Tough as Nails is more than a coming-of-age memoir. Originally written to assist her in her role as a West Point admissions liaison officer, the author shares knowledge gained in her 15 years working with admissions. Tough as Nails provides insights gained over a 30 year relationship with West Point and the Army. It began as a memoir of a female cadet. It evolved into lessons learned by a graduate married to a graduate, an officer, an officer's wife, and a mother of two cadets.
