Book Review: Not as good as others in the series

This book fell short of the mark, for some reason. I very much enjoy the Bar Cynster series, but the Bastion Club series has been hit or miss for me. And this particular story was a "miss." True, Laurens rarely deviates from her recipe: Combine one intensely masculine, arrogant lord with one intensely feminine, haughty lady. Mix together until instant sexual attraction (and initial resistance to that attraction) is achieved. Bake until sexual tension reaches its peak and intercourse commences (usually after 5-10 scenes or a good 50 or so pages of sexual build-up). Remove from oven once lord or lady is saved from the clutches of evil and lord and lady confess undying love to each other. Usually it's a very satisfying cake because the spicy icing on top is the underlying story/mystery of just who Dalziel really is and who the last unknown traitor is, and because of the interplay of the various other Bastion Club members and interesting characters in general. But in this book, everything took too long and wasn't quite as interesting. The analytical reasoning by both Deverell and Phoebe spun out page after page, after page after page, in too much detail. The mystery of just what clandestine activities Phoebe was engaged in unraveled way too slowly. (And has anyone else noticed the curious overuse in these books of words like "haughty" and "long-suffering" and "warrior-queen" and "warrior-lord"? Sometimes it becomes highly distracting.) The other Bastion Club members don't make appearances until nearly the ending third of the book, whereas in other books in the series, they are interwoven more regularly. Maybe that's why I found this particular story a little dry, the main characters not particularly interesting. Not a bad read, but definitely not a preferred one.
