Book Reviews of Tipping the Velvet: A NovelBook Review: Winning Character Summary: 4 StarsI really enjoyed the character of Nancy Astley. Her discovery of her lesbianism and sexuality is gradual and believeable. She is such a likeable character that you care what happens to her and you are pulling for things to turn out for her. Even while she stoops to some low tricks to survive, you can't help but feel she is a decent person struggling to do her best. The sex is sprinkled throughout the book liberally enough to keep things smoldering but are blended into her self-discovery and her passionate connection with the people around her. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that at points it seemed to slow down and run a little long. If I could give it 4 and a half stars I would!
Book Review: An amazing novel! Summary: 5 StarsThis book was one I purchased on a whim. I was not sure what it would be about, but it was recommended to me so I bought it. I was so sorry I even regretted purchasing it!
The book is just a masterpiece. The story is one that is hard to forget and keeps you reading. I could hardly put it down once I got started. I loved every bit of it.
Nancy is a very strong character with a striking transformation. She goes from being shy and introverted to bold and extroverted. After her first female love, Kitty, leaves her, she is forced to strengthen herself and begins to live life carelessly, wanting no love at all.
Soon she is taken in by Diana, a cruel and wealthy woman that holds Nancy's life and libido in her hands. Diana's cruel nature leaves her to abandon Nancy, who moves on with nothing.
She meets Florence again, having left Florence waiting a year and a half prior. Florence, a socialist, takes Nancy in, and here, in the latter part of the book, is where Nancy finds her peace.
You will laugh and cry at this book. Be astounded and shocked. Buy it and you won't regret it!
Book Review: Tasteful and Delightful! Summary: 5 StarsI first saw this book at the lesbian section of the book store, and even then i was interested with the title and the cover alone. Just recently i borrowed it from the library. After reading this book, i will DEFINITELY buy it!
First of all, this book is truly an erotic treat. The time era is captured so beautifully in this book that you FEEL it, and even more so you actually feel the love and the bond between the main characters, Nan King and Kitty Buttler. You feel as if you are witnessing the growth of these two characters and their passionate love affair come to life, and at the end, feel attached to it all the way. But even more so, when Nan begins a life anew after Kitty abandons her, you are instantly put into the situations that she encounters, and you even know more about her thoughts and feelings throughout all the ups and downs she goes through. What i loved the most about this book was its originality, and how it emersed you into the world of female cross dressers and "toms" during 19th century England. This is truly a good read, the erotic scenes are truly tasteful and delightful, the characters, very real, and the time era, beautifully captured. Whether you like lesbian themed novels or not, this is truly a must read. Highly recommended.
Book Review: I loved this book Summary: 5 StarsI purchased this book because it was listed as a top book by independent book store owners. It then sat on my bookshelf for 3 years before I had the nerve to read it. It's considered lesbian erotica, and I had a hard time getting my mind around that part. Whatever. As it turned out I loved the story. It reminded me of a cross between Jane Austen and Dickens, with an all-female cast. Something like that.
Book Review: Tipping the Velvet is Slang for... Summary: 5 StarsYou'll just have to read the book to find out. But read it you really really must. Tipping the Velvet is the first novel by Sarah Waters and is extremely original. I read Fingersmith by her before this and was intrigued by her original story lines that make you jump, cry and laugh. Tipping the Velvet was no different. In this the storyline isn't quite so twisty and turny but you get really hooked onto the main character. The descriptions are amazing and put you in her shoes - in an exotic, saucy and interesting world. I can picture everything Sarah Waters describes as she puts the reader into a great journey.
