Book Reviews of Tipping the Velvet: A NovelBook Review: Wow, what a book! Summary: 5 Stars
Like no lesbian fiction you have read before, this story evokes the whole range of emotions from your spirit, which is what a good book should do isn't it? Totally unpredictable, racey and classy, this is a harsh, but touching tale that leads you through the streets of London, with every turn a different outcome. Truly enjoyed that the author was not afraid to enter the realm of darker emotions and desires that most people keep to themselves. The writing is top notch, not your ordinary "see Spot run" style that so many of the lesbian love stories seem to use. This is one for the "Classic Lesbian Novels" list.
Book Review: A Picaresque Journey Summary: 5 Stars
A great book and it was just at the right time that I picked it up. It is a picaresque novel of the life of Nancy Astley who lives in Victorian London and is a lesbian. Through the novel's 400 pages she lives four lives and vividly describes them as she goes from being a poor oyster-seller, male impersonator in London's Music Halls, a rent-boy and then a kept boy and then to leading edge of socialist protest in the East End of London. All the while the book is a racy and a fast read with lots of sex, drama and adventure in it. Highly recommended if you like Dickens, Victorian England, picaresque novels and love stories.
Book Review: This Book Made my insides tremble with pleasure ; ) Summary: 5 Stars
The only thing that I regret about this book, is that I didn't buy it the very first day it came out. Sarah Waters did a fabulous job on writing this great masterpiece. When reading this book, I could feel and see everything that was happening throughout the novel. The book was so great that it's almost like you can feel yourself becoming the characters, especially Nan , the main character. She goes through so many incredible changes, so incredible that it's almost shocking to remember how she first was. It is also very erotic at times that it just makes you full of pleasure while reading this. READ THIS BOOK
Book Review: Not yer mama's lesbian fiction... Summary: 5 Stars
Lesbian fiction was a category that we read because it was, well, lesbian. Not because it was good. Most of it was downright awful, and if approached mediocre it was like the clouds parted and the angels sang. But we kept reading and buying.
The fact that this book is lesbian themed is no reason to buy it. Buy it because it is a great book. It weaves an epic story with prose that helps you visualize, smell, hear, and breath 19th century London and the life of working people, the love of families, the struggles of unconventional young women. Think Dickens, think Austen. Mostly, read this book.
Book Review: Tipping the Velvet is Slang for... Summary: 5 Stars
You'll just have to read the book to find out. But read it you really really must. Tipping the Velvet is the first novel by Sarah Waters and is extremely original. I read Fingersmith by her before this and was intrigued by her original story lines that make you jump, cry and laugh. Tipping the Velvet was no different. In this the storyline isn't quite so twisty and turny but you get really hooked onto the main character. The descriptions are amazing and put you in her shoes - in an exotic, saucy and interesting world. I can picture everything Sarah Waters describes as she puts the reader into a great journey.
