Book Reviews of Three Weeks with My BrotherBook Review: THIS REALLY LOOKS STUPID!!! (but it wasn't) Summary: 5 Stars
Hey, I'm dead serious. When I saw the title of this book, glaring at me from the Wal-Mart shelf, I scoffed. And immediately, my thought was like, WHO DOES HE THINK HE IS? Just put together a book about him and his stupid brother, Micah, huh? I was honestly hoping the worst for this book, knowing that just because it had NICHOLAS SPARKS written on it, that automatically it would be a bestseller. But you know something? That was before I'd actually read something by Nicholas Sparks. Then I read a few of his works, and I really enjoyed what I'd read.
But it still stuck out in my mind that this looked really stupid. And so I picked it up to get it out of the way. AND IT WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITES!! I really, really got into this!
My mindset was the way Nick (or Nicky) was feeling about taking this trip with his brother. He really wasn't looking forward to it. I suppose if Sparks had it his way, he would've focused on working, on staying busy. He had a passion for staying busy, he stayed busy to be busy. And we read that Micah had always been the outgoing one, always the one to take chances. So a three week trip across different areas of the world is just what Sparks needed, right? YOU find out!
Starting from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Nicholas and his brother, Micah, took an amazing journey. They went to Guatemala, they went to Peru, they went to Easter Island, they went to Australia, they went to Ethiopia...they went lots of different places! But they didn't just travel, they reflected back on their lives. They remembered growing up with little sister, Dana, and all the adventures they had. They also reflected on how they didn't always have everything, and how it really wasn't so bad! Nicholas and Micah showed what it was like being brothers, and how sometimes, THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT IS, regardless of being fair or unfair. When it came down to it, there was always a great admiration for his parents as well.
Nicholas Sparks took THREE WEEKS WITH HIS BROTHER because he wanted to, not because anybody forced him to. He had a good time doing it, because he wanted to, and not because anybody forced him to. He lived a little, and he forgot about his hectic schedule. He had a deeper appreciation of his family, his wife, his kids. A lot things hit home in this with me, because Nick basically told his story, not just what his three week trip consisted of. Nick has experienced tragedy, he's experienced great times, he's become a millionaire, (so has his brother) and he's lived life! And I experienced one heck of a good read by one of the best! You should try it too.
Summary of Three Weeks with My BrotherAs moving as his bestselling works of fiction, Nicholas Sparks's unique memoir, written with his brother, chronicles the life-affirming journey of two brothers bound by memories, both humorous and tragicIn January 2003, Nicholas Sparks and his brother, Micah, set off on a three-week trip around the globe. It was to mark a milestone in their lives, for at thirty-seven and thirty-eight respectively, they were now the only surviving members of their family. Against the backdrop of the wonders of the world and often overtaken by their feelings, daredevil Micah and the more serious, introspective Nicholas recalled their rambunctious childhood adventures and the tragedies that tested their faith. And in the process, they discovered startling truths about loss, love, and hope.Narrated with irrepressible humor and rare candor, and including personal photos, THREE WEEKS WITH MY BROTHER reminds us to embrace life with all its uncertainties...and most of all, to cherish the joyful times, both small and momentous, and the wonderful people who make them possible.
