Book Reviews of Three Little Words: A Memoir

Book Review: Tragic Beginning Happy Ending
Summary: 5 Stars

I work in an agency that handles reports of abused children, and this book intrigued me. Written from the viewpoint of a child (now an adult) who had been removed from her mother, and tossed about in foster care, Ashley had finally landed with an adoptive family. But she had a story that needed to be told.

Ashley was only 4 years old when she was removed from her mother and first placed into foster care. Like Ashley, the reader is left confused about the reason for the removal. Ashley also imparts the feeling of strangeness and that of being an "outsider" within a foster home.

When Ashley is placed with relatives, one feels that she may finally get a chance at some sense of normalcy. But, this is just a very young girl in a very large system, who has no one to really care about her.

Fortunately, some of the things Ashley and her brother faced are being addressed within the Child Welfare System and made better. Sadly, a lot of things are still the same. Now that Ashley has become an adult, she has made it her mission to inform others of the plight of these children and that is a good thing. This book is a great start! She tells her story in a simple, easy to understand way, but from the perspective of her understanding. She didn't always understand why things were done - she simply wasn't told. But that confusion is part of the "system," sad as it is. And Ashley's writing might seem "juvenile" to some, but that is to be expected: she was young when she wrote this book, and her intended audience is teen/young adult.

Yes, regardless of age, there is an important message within the pages of this book. Granted, Ashley's life didn't start out very well, but her life did have a happy ending. Yet, there are other children who still in foster care, and may never have the ending she experienced. This is touching book.

Summary of Three Little Words: A Memoir

"Sunshine, you're my baby and I'm your only mother. You must mind the one taking care of you, but she's not your mama." Ashley Rhodes-Courter spent nine years of her life in fourteen different foster homes, living by those words. As her mother spirals out of control, Ashley is left clinging to an unpredictable, dissolving relationship, all the while getting pulled deeper and deeper into the foster care system.

Painful memories of being taken away from her home quickly become consumed by real-life horrors, where Ashley is juggled between caseworkers, shuffled from school to school, and forced to endure manipulative, humiliating treatment from a very abusive foster family. In this inspiring, unforgettable memoir, Ashley finds the courage to succeed - and in doing so, discovers the power of her own voice.
