Book Reviews of the Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Fight Terrorism and Build Nations One School at a TimeCustomer Review: Lives up to its 5 star ratings Summary: 5 StarsJust by chance I picked this up in an airport bookstore--what luck! You know the story--one slightly crazy guy turns the failure to summit K2 into a resounding success, and establishing schools in one of the most tumultuous and hostile regions of the world to Americans has become his life's work. Aside from the compelling story, this book should make you reflect long and hard about American policy in the Muslim world.
While struggling to build his first school, Mortenson had the great good fortune to be taken in hand by Haji Ali, Muslim leader of a tiny village in Pakistan, Kushe, that barely appears on a map. He learned a number of very important lessons. Work through the existing power structure. Don't try to import American style work methods to a totally different society. Ask the people what they want. Learn the language. Develop allies. Hmmm--makes sense, doesn't it? In contrast, America poured missiles into Afghanistan and then got distracted by Iraq, and look what has happened.
This book could have been a tirade against the US, but it's not. This could have been a "too good to be true" story, but it's not. Olin is an unabashed admirer of Mortenson's but tells us so, right up front. We could be suspicious of the motives for writing the book, but they're laid out plainly--the work needs to be funded. Mortenson points out that a laser guided mssile costs $840,000. At $12,000 each, that's a lot of schools.
This is an important book. A lot of Americans have strong opinions about Islam, but few personally know any Muslims. Mortenson has a simple message, which I believe--most people want peace, food for their children, education, freedom to live as they choose. Not very complicated, hard to implement.
