Mark Everett, otherwise known in the music world as 'E', is an ordinary guy with problems. He's also the singer-songwriter behind the Eels, an indie rock band that continues to defy convention and accumulate fans worldwide. Since his family was first struck by tragedy when E was a teenager, he has been through a lot of heartache which he describes in this memoir in plain, straightforward prose. Unlike most celebrity lives, E's pain seems thrust upon him by fate and is not the result of rock n' roll excess. I was an eels fan to start which is what led me to read this book and I read the entire thing in two days time! But more that that I passed it on to my cousin who was not familiar with the Eels and she loved it so much she finished it in 3 days herself, as did my brother and his wife after him. It's a touching life story that I think everyone can relate to in some form, and Mark Oliver Everett does it all with brutal honesty. When reading this book you feel like you are sitting in front of the Eels front man being told his story. Highly recommended! Don't miss it.Book Review: A must for Eels fans

this book is terribly bittersweet,
at times I was smiling, and near tears .
He posses not just a gift for song writing,
a gifted storyteller as well.
These are true stories,
and a deeper look into how Oliver's personal experiences
were transposed into song.
Terrific stuff.

I bought this book because I saw Parallel Universes on PBS and Mark looks an interesting character. Also I have similar tragic history in my family, so I decide to see what Mark had to say about his life. He is really fun and the book has intense moments (at least for me) and it is easy to read. It is refreshing how Mark lives his life; it seems just simple. Now I`m Eels fan!! It was great to read this memoir and can`t wait for the next one.Book Review: What a wonderful surprise!

I knew of the author's music with the Eels, but one needn't know him at all to appreciate how special this book is. It's a rare memoir that can speak candidly of such heartbreaking events while making you laugh out loud at the same time (and I'm not the kind of person who usually laughs out loud at books)! Readers will be surprised by this unique, charming, poignant story. I even love the cover. It's a little book that roars.
