Book Reviews of Things We Couldn't Say

Book Review: A realistic and personal appraisal of courage
Summary: 5 Stars

Even at its' most mildest, the German occupation of other countries in World War II was harsh and deadly. First and foremost was rigid control of the populations and the rounding up of undesirables for imprisonment and extermination, in general this meant the Jews. This book is a history of the occupation of the Netherlands, told by someone who was a non-violent resister.
Diet Eman and her fiancé Hein Sietsma were part of an organization that aided Jewish people by hiding them, sometimes in plain sight but most often out of view. In order to obtain food and other essentials, identity and ration cards were needed so this also meant that they had to provide false papers and cards to the people. Finally, there was the occasional downed Allied airman that had to be protected and then transported out of the country and back to England.
At a minimum, any of these actions would have led to imprisonment and even those slightly more significant acts meant execution. Yet, they bravely took up the challenge, Diet was eventually imprisoned for her actions, she was fortunate in that she was able to dispose of the most incriminating evidence before she was incarcerated. Had she not been able to do that, she would have been killed.
What is most revealing about Diet's account is that she honestly admits that if they had known at the beginning how long the war would last it is likely that they would not have been so willing to aid the Jews. When the Germans first occupied the Netherlands in 1940, Diet and her group believed that the war would be over in at most two years when the Dutch army and their allies would liberate the country. However, it lasted five years and more was destroyed than they had ever thought possible.
There are many stories about heroic resistance to the Nazi occupiers that can and should be told. Those were terrible times and it is uplifting to know that there were people who risked all to aid others when they simply could have turned their backs to the "problem."

Summary of Things We Couldn't Say

Here is the incredible true story of Diet Eman, who, with her fiance, Hein Sietsma, risked everything to rescue Dutch Jews imperiled by Nazi persecution in occupied Holland during World War II. Emans first-person narrative vividly captures the gripping events of her brave saga.
