Book Reviews of Things I have learned in my life so far

Book Review: Inspirational!
Summary: 5 Stars

"There is always someone who has done something cooler than what I am doing at the moment." This aphorism won't be found in Stefan Sagmeister's new book since I coined it myself, but it neatly summarizes the wonder and awe I felt when looking through these 15 booklets of words and images.

But surely it is a measure of the intensity and scope of his vision that it can shake one from artistic or moral complacency, and can inspire perhaps a new pathway to different kinds of creative thinking and a more considered involvement and connection with the world.

Sagmeister's "Everybody who is honest is interesting" is my favorite phrase and aptly informs, I believe, the designer's own Weltanschauung - where the best, most communicative art emerges only out of the most careful and honest self-examination. Or, as Socrates would have noted: "The unexamined life is not worth living."

Book Review: The Man's a Genius (and a good guy).
Summary: 5 Stars

I read a lot of design books and Stefan's books never cease to entertain and inspire. This book is no exception.

Although we have already seen many different pieces that are in this book, it is great to see and read about the entire project. It is fascinating to have all the work in one place, see the process it took to make these creations and discover the meaning behind it all. What has always struck me about Stefan's work is the complete originality behind it and the guts that it takes to produce work like his own.

What impacts me even more than the work, is the message behind the work. We (consumer minded designers) tend to lose site of what really matters in life. So many of the messages in Stefan's work are great reminders, and it takes somebody rendering these ideas in such painstaking ways, to make us take a second look at our priorities in life.

Book Review: Things I've Learned In My Life So Far.
Summary: 5 Stars

"Things I've learned in my life so far", represents Stefan's latest gift to the world and a rare glimpse into the mind and passion of one of today's most gifted designers and thinkers. Commanding interaction, masterfully crafted and produced, it touches, pokes, illuminates, challenges, and inspires even the most casual of reader. With each page Stefan treats us, as only he can, to a boundless buffet of evocative unfettered visual expression, striking all of the emotional chords in perfect pitch. Softly sprinkled throughout is a common sense perspective on life, art, and our world that is at once both poignant, and refreshingly warm. This is a must read publication, whether you're a senior executive, stay at home mom, instructor, young designer, artist, or a seasoned communications professional. Congratulations!

Book Review: stepping away from the computer. or, being an ideas person.
Summary: 5 Stars

i think this book should be in the arsenal of every designer out there, to be read through when one is feeling jaded or burnt out by the design process, and hopefully serve as inspiration to get you through that period. that said, i also think this book should be forced reading for designers who never step away from their computer long enough to have any truly big ideas or ster from their "style". stefan's a designer who approaches design from every aspect of his life. that's not just atrite saying on his resumé. it's a truism. not your typical book, this instead is a number of booklets that chronicle a number of projects stefan and team did over the past few years to try to see the world differently, and to try and get teh world to see differently. worth reading.

Book Review: I got the acne one.
Summary: 5 Stars

Hi Stefan,

I had fun time picking up every single book of yours in the book
store today. I am sorry that the Japanese Esquire Magazine rejected
your piss type. I got such a big kick out of it when I saw the work
on the magazine cover at the magazine stand somewhere in NY. I have
pissed on the street so many times in Japan and I have never got
arrested for it. The reasons why your work got rejected were even
ridiculous, and I don't know why they asked you to do whatever for
the cover in the first place. Well, I guess they thought they were
right to think like that way and reject it, but the whole story
proved your point indeed.

Thanks,
satoru
