Book Reviews of Things I Overheard While Talking to Myself

Book Review: A good book by a good person
Summary: 5 Stars

Alan Alda actor and storyteller reminisces and ruminates in this book about his own life and its meaning. He presents through it a series of college - commencement addresses he has given, and comments on those. He tells stories of his family of his career and of the many interesting people he has met on the way. He shows throughout the work a curiosity about and appreciation of others. He has a fairness and modesty about himself, and also a light touch and sense of humor. The book provides insights into the world of acting, and some of the best passages are Alda's description of the meaning of acting, and the special ecstasy it provides him. It is clear that Alda is a good and decent person, very caring about his family and very conscienscious in his work. He is also a serious person about the life of the mind. This is a good book by a good person.

Book Review: He's always eager to share his philosophy of life...from author of EXPLOSION IN PARIS...
Summary: 5 Stars

I've always loved the characters Alan Alda played and I have a feeling that he's very much like his characters, smart, quick-witted, sensitive, hilarious, easy going, self-depricating. philosophical, and always willing to share his opinions, and also willing to listen to other's opinions. He seems to have great heart. Some of the negative reviews on this site were disappointing to read. It always amazes me how so much of human nature is so quick to judge and assumes the worst in people. I think the older we get we realize what in life is important and we see things through more forgiving eyes. Yes, and I think, basically, that was one of Alan's top messages. You can lead a horse to water....but...(you know the saying) I enjoyed his book and will buy his next one too.

Book Review: Excellent Read
Summary: 5 Stars

Very smoothly, seamlessly written. Although there are many excerpts from his speeches, the author has also given us a profound, insightful book.
Alda'a near death experience, and consequent revelations are a pleasure to read.
In highlighting his rocky road to achieving good mental & emotional health, the author must have had the average man/woman in mind.He writes
with passion and heart.

Book Review: Like chating with a close friend
Summary: 5 Stars

Every time I see Alan Alda -- whether film or TV -- I think to myself: "This is a man I would love to have a long chat with over coffee or dinner or whatever." And that's what reading his book makes me feel I'm doing. Alda shares his life experiences as though his readers are close friends -- with a sense of humor, intimacy and sincerity that comes through on every page. Pick it up, it's a treasure.

Book Review: Dear Alan... have I told you lately....
Summary: 5 Stars

I so respect Alan Alda, that his book, (which happens to be great) could be the worst thing ever
published and I would probably still love it!!! So glad that I don't have to defend my opinion,
everyone I have lent it to loves it also. Just want to make sure I get it back, otherwise I shall have
to buy another copy. Maybe that is not such a bad idea!!!
