Book Reviews of They Call Me Coach

Book Review: They Call Me Coach
Summary: 5 Stars

"They Call Me Coach" by John Woooden is a highly enjoyable read on one of sports well-known and loved coaches - John Wooden.

This highly readable account covers several areas:

1. Early years growing up in Indiana and happy family life.
2. Courtship of and marriage to his beloved Nellies.
3. College education at Purdue University.
4. Early coaching years.
5. Coaching career at UCLA.
6. Insights on different players he coached.
7. Philosophy of life and how faith in Jesus Christ was very important to him.

Living in "Tobacco Road" (for those of you, that means North Carolina, home of the UNC Tar Heels, Duke Blue Devils, Wake Forest Demon Deacons, NC State Wolfpack, etc.), I usually pull for ACC teams during the annual NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Quite frankly, as a kid growing up, I rooted for UCLA to get beat. However, after maturing and learning more about how great a man Coach John Wooden really was, I wish he would have led UCLA to even more championships.

One of the reasons I liked him was his refusal to try to continually emotionally charge his players just before game. His reasoning was that if a young player gets on an emotional high, there will be an inevitable letdown. He makes a very good point. Additionally, I have heard coaches try to "charge up" their players with language unbecoming a coach. Call me square if you like, but you are entitled to your opinion!

All in all, the book is very insightful and enjoyable read of one of college or pro sports' best coaches ever.

Highly recommended.

Book Review: Inspiring glimpse into a master coach's life
Summary: 5 Stars

John Wooden is perhaps America's greatest coach. His UCLA basketball team won ten national championships, including seven in a row. Concomitant with winning was his insistence on character and virtue rather than getting caught up with results.

This autobiography is a fascinating glimpse into Wooden's extraordinary life. It chronicles his life as a player (many forget that Wooden was elected to the basketball hall-of-fame as a player and coach), his coaching days (mostly at UCLA), and a little bit about his activities after his retirement. Interspersed in all of this are Wooden's coaching philosophy, pictures, box scores of the national championship games, and Wooden's opinion on how to improve the quality of NCAA basketball.

They Call Me Coach is tremendous for any sports fan, especially basketball. It can also be enjoyed by those who enjoy reading about what it takes to achieve success. Wooden was not a dictator, but imparted his insistence on doing one's best to his players with meticulous detail.

TCMC is not a complete autobiography, and it omits many aspects of Wooden's life. It is certainly not a "tell-all" account, nor is it perhaps the best book on articulating Wooden's coaching philosophy. For that I would recommend another of Wooden's books, appropriately titled Wooden. There are also others out there.

They Call Me Coach is a wonderful account of a man who as achieved true life success, and you will enjoy this read regardless of your previous knowledge on Wooden or college basketball.

Book Review: old school, but Wooden was still a class act
Summary: 5 Stars

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Wooden was one-of-a-kind, a real class act. I especially enjoyed the little personal inside stories about players like Walton and Alcindor. The story near the end of the book about withdrawing a scholarship from a recruit after hearing him yell at his parents and calling them "stupid" was a great story. I wish our generation had more coaches like him.
