Book Reviews of These Rare LandsBook Review: Awe-Inspiring Photos Summary: 5 Stars
Jorstad's photographic review of each of America's 54 national parks is an absolutely amazing look at some of the most beautiful places in our country. Jorstad visited each park several times, during different seasons. His visits enabled him to capture the light of each park, and provides the reader with incredibly nuanced and beautiful panoramas of each location. The pictures are accompanied by a lovely, lyrical text.Overall, this book is a great investment for armchair travelers who want to experience the wonders of nature. Very highly recommended.
Summary of These Rare LandsFrom the dusty red sandstone formations of Arches, the miraculous chasm of the Grand Canyon, and the rugged beauty of Yellowstone to the primal forests of the Smokies and the secret mysteries of the Everglades, America's National Parks are so rich in natural splendor as to defy documentation. But if any photographer can do justice to the subject it is Stan Jorstad, whose unrivaled images fill the pages of this magnificent work.Strongly influenced by his mentor and friend Ansel Adams, Jorstad nonetheless photographs in color and often with the panoramic camera. The dazzling results are unrivaled by the work of any other living photographer and include some of the most astonishing landscape photos ever created. With a moving introduction written by Robert Redford, Mark Strand, one of this country's greatest poetic voices, contributes a text reflecting on the splendor and the meaning of the parks themselves and on the almost mystical beauty of Jorstad's photography. If a picture's worth 1,000 words, this book--with its hundreds of breathtaking photos of America's National Parks--is a well-stocked bookstore. Accompanied by the words of poet laureate Mark Strand, These Rare Lands is a perfect coffee-table book for anyone who has enjoyed the wonders of nature's wildest places. From a storm over Sequoia National Park in California to the otherworldly stalactites and stalagmites of New Mexico's Carlsbad Caverns and an Atlantic sunset in Maine's Acadia, this is a book that draws you back again and again. Photographer Stan Jorstad's obvious love of nature comes through in the thoughtful approach he takes to his life's work, contained in the pages of These Rare Lands.
