Book Review: A great comfort in my grief

Firstly, if your pet is gravely ill, purchase this book soonest as it will be very helpful to you after your pet passes away: You don't want to wait till it arrives via mail.
Although I was very hopeful that my beloved dog, Buster, would go to heaven where I would one day meet him, I still had nagging doubts as: Why do so many contemporary ministers, including some I highly respect, not believe in the eternal souls of animals? After having several dogs over the years, it was quite obvious that each one had a unique personality, even dogs of the same breed. After reading this book, I was greatly comforted and am now strongly convinced that Buster will be there when I pass on to greet me with the Lord Jesus. This novel addresses the issue from a Biblical, and Christian, perspective, but there are many references to the Old Testamant which will be of comfort, I believe, to Jewish believers also. (There is one chapter on faith in Christ for humans.)
Ms. Shanahan uses a plethora of Biblical verses to make her case that animals have souls and breaks important phrases down to their original Greek and Hebrew words to illustrate how key shadings of meaning can be lost in the translation of the Biblical text to the English language. She uses several verses to make each point.
The text also has selections from ministers from various denominations from the past, including John Calvin, John Wesley, and St. Francis of Assisi, who believed in the eternal souls of animals. This was greatly helpful to me as she explains how many ministers give answers to grieving Christians without having studied the texts carefully.
She has one chapter that details key misinterpretations of some passages that lead some believers to wrong conclusions about animals. Also, I realized that I was lacking spiritual maturity in relation to animals, as she also has a chapter on praying for animals in a way that I had never considered before and plan to apply when I, God-willing, have another terrier in my life in the future.
This book is compact and a quick read. There is a lot of concrete information and very little padding. There is one section on NDEs and Christians who have had visions of animals in heaven, of which Ms. Shanahan admits is not material one should place their trust too strongly in, as it is not Scripture and is subject to skepticism, but may be of comfort to some readers. (As the Bible warns in Colossians 2:18 to be wary of someone who "tak(es) his stand on visions he has seen.)
I highly recommend this book because I have been heartbroken by the loss of my terrier and am greatly comforted. The real test of the application of Scripture is not when a situation is theoretical, but when you are actually in the fire of testing. This book passed my test.Animal Prayer Guide
