How many times has anyone of us used a figure of speech in conversation? What allegorical figures of speech have we used to describe a person or situation?
Well, take for example, the title of this book: There's An Alligator Under My Bed. The little boy in this story must empower himself to conquer his fears, since no one in his family can see the alligator. He devises a plan to get the alligator out of his room, and positions it to go elsewhere. Of course, he only imagines that he sees the alligator; it probably has to do with the mess in his room, specifically, under his bed. Perhaps, his Dad even described the situation at some time to identify the room with looking much like the living space of an animal.
And so, the young boy in the story, takes on this animal and trains it to leave. Now think about that! This child is lively and energetic and always thinking outside the box. What a powerful effort for him to re-train the "alligator" by using bait to get the alligator from under his bed to the garage. Here is a child who is conquering his fears and tackling the problem, and coming up with a very unique solution.
Now, whether it's under the bed, or in the garage, or even in your living room, what will you do to stimulate your child to get the alligator or the elephant, for that matter, out of your house? Get to work! We've often heard the expression "there's an elephant in the living room" and everyone is just walking around it. Even adults will be able to translate this allegory into some behavior issues that may need tending to.
