Book Reviews of Then Comes Seduction (Huxtable)Book Review: Dull, trite, wooden Summary: 2 Stars
This is another example of a cranked out romance novel in a trilogy. Authors spend so much time setting up sequels that they don't pay attention to the essentials, of 2 interesting and believable characters falling in love.
Her characters have all the depth of a muddle puddle in this book, and the wager and rake seducing has been done to death unless there is some sort of special twist or redeeming feature.
This is not that book. It is historical Regency romance formula fiction at its worst, and the only reason I gave it two stars is that I liked the heroine.
One other complaint--I hate to say it, but there are very few romance writers who can write MEN. They are so cardboard, or assumed to have no feelings and emotions other than lust, nor any motivations other than that and a constant pursuit of drunkenness.
The wager is offensive at the start, and the book never recovers from the terrible start. This is as bad as First Comes Marriage and I really hope the author reads her reviews and takes constructive criticism to heart.
Book Review: Oh, I'm so disappointed! Summary: 2 Stars
I love Mary Balogh. I have bought all her books, even her out of print books (all except Trysting Place and The Wood Nymph). I was eagerly looking forward to her new series. I was disappointed with First Comes Marriage but I waited until I read Then Comes Seduction before I weighed in with a review.
The books are boring. The main characters, the Huxtable family, are good, kind, handsome/lovely, gentle, etc., etc. Their only problem is that they are poor and live in an isolated place. Balogh fixes this situation by having them inherit money and a title. They move to London to find true love among the Ton.
Over the course of 300 pages they find true love. The end. Who cares? Maybe the last 2 books of the series will be more interesting. I will read them because I respect Balogh's talent. I hope I get pain, suffering, redemption, a flinty hero and a proud heroine and all that other exciting stuff I crave.
Book Review: Is this what historical romance is now? Summary: 2 Stars
The originality of this book was the wager that was made in the first chapter. Jasper was suppose to seduce the virgin Katherine in 2 weeks. It felt wrong and I was like WHAT??? After that this book turned into the cookie cutter plot that is soooo popular now a days in historical romances. Heroine and Hero meet, there is a connection, they get married, then of course the hero doesn't know what love is, and the heroine is in love with the hero and refuses to admit it to him. Then the end...they realize they love each other. THIS IS FICTION AUTHORS YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT!!!! COME UP WITH SOMETHING ORIGINAL!!! Don't get me wrong, I love knowing the ending. I mean why would I want to get read a book that didn't have an implied "AND THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER". The journey to love should not be the same there could just be sooo much more to this book. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring back my faith in the genera.
Book Review: This is not classic Balogh!!! Summary: 2 Stars
Not even close. As much as I like this author's work, this book just doesn't have anything special. There are a few pages where one can believe the book is going somewhere, but it never gets there.
A lot of repetition, the female character thinking about the same thing over and over again. Dull and slow, there is potential but as I said, it never gets there. It almost feels like the author was writing page after page thinking "I have a book to write, let's just get this over with".
The first book in the series was much better.
Book Review: BORING Summary: 2 Stars
Over-written, sluggish, no chemistry, no depth or sparkle in the characters...If this was my first experience with Mary Balogh it would be my last, I could barely finish and had to skim to finish. The first major scene in Vauxhall Gardens was so unbelievable I almost put the book down then and there. And that other people knew what happened and did/said nothing at the time is also ridiculous - this book was so bad it's almost like someone else wrote it. And oh by the way - do you need SO MANY italics?? Mary, how could you do this to us??
