Book Review: Katherine's book -The Huxtable Quintet series

Drunk and bored after a less-than-spectacular night of celebrating his twenty fifth birthday, Jasper Finely, Baron Montford, accepts a most despicable wager. London's most prolifically successful rakehell's challenge is to seduce (meaning having full intercourse with) an innocent within a fortnight. The target is the beautiful and virtuous Katherine Huxtable, sister of Vanessa (First Comes Marriage, Meg At Last Comes Love (Huxtable) and Stephen Huxtable Seducing an Angel (Huxtable). Having previously captured his eye, Katherine presents an irresistible conquest for the weary Jasper having peeked his interest. Determined to win, Jasper systematically goes about luring the young lady into his clutches. But things don't go as planned on a darkened path one night in Vauxhall Gardens. So they part vowing never to see one another again. Three years pass and they meet again. And much to both of their chagrin nothing has changed. The passion, confusion and hurt are still there. But now there is a new wager, one of a completely different sort. A wager of who can make the other fall in love first. Dare they risk falling in love?
Very well done romance. A slow moving complex love story that seems to follow the trend of Balogh's last few books. Unlike the back cover would suggest this is a romance that's low on action and drama, but high on tender/gentle romance. I was admittedly disgusted by the initial wager and couldn't fathom how Balogh could redeem such a 'gentleman'. Isn't seducing innocents the only line a rake deliberately wouldn't cross? But I needn't have worried. Balogh is superb at characterization and plotting and I was eventually turned around. All the problems pertaining to Jasper and Katherine's romance may have started out on the wrong foot and they had a very, very long hill to climb but they did in the end get there. Yes, this is definitely a long quiet friends-at-first romance, not a super passionate angst ridden book with roller coasters of emotions. Nevertheless a fine heart warming realistic romance for the period. Recommended.
