Book Review: Not Quite as good as the first...but still
Summary: 3 Stars
This is the second book in the Huxtable series by Mary Balogh. The events are about Katherine Huxtable the younger of the 3 sisters in the Huxtable family. The story starts off I believe a week before the end of Vanessa's (First Comes Marriage) story. I just want to say first off that the story I wanted to read after finishing the first book was Meg's story, which is the third in the series. So I thought I needed to read this one first before I moved on to the other. After finishing I don't think there was much development to anything else except for what happens to Katherine.
At the end of First Comes Marriage I also thought there was more to Con's story at least his side of things. I was disappointed in that aspect to, although he does appear in the story there was nothing about him and what his view of the feud with Elliot was.
The story starts with jasper on the night of his 25Th birthday making a bet that he can seduce Katherine. After that bet he sets off to do just that but loses the first bet in his life. Here is where I was already not quiet fond of the story Katherine to me was not a strong character. Unlike her sister Vanessa she was actually plain to me. Since most heroines are good looking, long hair, irresistible eyes. She also lacked the strong personality her sister did in the first story, it wasn't until later in the story that she started showing a stronger side. Jasper on the other hand I actually enjoyed even though he was the typical handsome, well built male character. He had more than the exterior looks going for him. His character I thought was developed nicely.
After that first meeting and his failure of winning the wager they meet again 3 years later and he still finds himself fascinated with her. There is a scandal around town and he offers her marriage and then we get to explore the real characters. If I had been reading this in a book instead of listening to audio I think I would not have finished it. The story seemed very slow but Ann Flosnik did a wonderful narration job. I had listened to her once before and loved her then, the same applies to this book. The way she brings characters to live and takes on different tones and voices along with multiple emotions was amazing.
I still intend to read Meg's story with the hope that it was as good as the first.
