Book Review: A brave memoir.

Joan Didion wrote, "Life changes in the instant. The ordinary instant." In the Year of Magical Thinking she chronicles the death of her husband, John Dunne and her journey in coming to grips with her shock and grief, while her daughter, Quintana, is battling illness. She states that one may expect shock after a death, but "We do not expect this shock to be obliterative, dislocating to both body and mind." Didion writes with poignant truth, raw emotions, and shocking clarity of the confusion that comes with grief. Her life changed in that ordinary instant, and Didion bravely shares with the reader the abject feelings of grief, and the foggy and cloudy thinking that at times included magical thinking. The author expresses all this in a way that is not overly depressing for the reader. This is a remarkable book.
