Book Reviews of The Yankee Years

Book Review: A Red Sox Fan
Summary: 5 Stars

Believe it or not, as a Sox fan I didn't expect a scathing tell all...I got what I expected from one of the last true gents of the game. Torre's book, while pointing out some of the buises after the last Series victory comes from a place that longed for the days of the Yankee greatness he and his team created. I came away with a new respect for some of the players I despised for their greatness. It's not about the numbers, it's about the team and game. The rest takes care of itself.

Book Review: TORRE IS A CLASS ACT
Summary: 5 Stars

Joe Torre is a true gentleman of the game of baseball. He has told it the way it is. He will go down in history with the great Yankee managers - Miller Huggins, Joe McCarthy, Casey Stengel, Ralph Houk, Billy Martin - and may be the most first class of 'em all. Torre was always courteous to the media even when it was a frenzy. This book is written in a third-person narrative, not as Torre's autobiography, so co-writer Verducci reported on what he saw, not aways attributable to Torre.

Book Review: A CANDID BOOK WITH MUCH BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Summary: 5 Stars

Someone has to be patient to read this book because it has 482 pages. However, there is much worthwhile information. Torre mentions the reasons Randy Johnson and Kevin Brown flopped as Yankees. There was good information on the steroid scandal and its effect on the Yankees. The interviews with Billy Beane and Theo Epstein about the economics of baseball and theories of scouting were excellent, though Beane has altered his approach.

Book Review: Yankee Jeers
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is not only the life of Joe Torre as manager of the Yankees but the players that called the Yankee Clubhouse home during his tenure. It's not a whiny nit picking version of life as the Yankee skipper but a realistic view of the inside bureaucracy that is a daily part of life in that position. Most Yankee fans know most of the scuttlebutt this just confirms it. I enjoyed it and have been a fan for over 35 years.

Book Review: LIFE IN THE FAST LANE OF MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
Summary: 5 Stars

This a blistering, insightful, intense, comprehensive, revealing window into major league baseball and working under George Steinbrenner. Authors Joe Torre and Tom Verducci share the complexities of overseeing talented atheletes, managing their egos and competitive natures, balancing it all to "play ball" and win the game. Modern gladiators on a baseball diamond. Well written, entertaining and informative.
