Book Reviews of The Woods

Book Review: Ordinary people with extraordinary secretes. . .
Summary: 5 Stars

Just started reading Coben recently; I had recommended "Tourist in the Yucatan" to a friend. He already read "Tourist" and recommended I should also like Coben as their styles were similar. Well, I took my friends advice and have become a big Harlen Coben fan! I like the way Coben takes seemingly ordinary people and then puts them in extraordinary circumstances. I think it makes for a much better thriller than the typical world weary cops and detectives or the super-human antics of some of the genre's characters. With Coben we real people in unreal or terrifying situations and that makes it seem all the more real. He also knows how to create emotional connections between the reader and the characters.

In this one we have a county prosecutor who is pulled into reliving an old tragedy from his youth and his loss of innocence. The story is ultimately about redemption. If you are looking for a smart thriller that does not follow the rules, I highly recommend this book!

Book Review: Stunning Audiobook
Summary: 5 Stars

I listened to the Audiobook. The passion that came through in Scott Brick's visceral performance probably blows away anything in written form. This book was superb in audio. The twists and turns came through loud and clear. It was gripping all the way through. To be sure there were some flaws. Replicating the Duke case wasn't the best idea. It might have confused the reader with Coben's bias rather than be the basis for the central conflicts heaped on protagonist Copeland. Moreover the plot leaps took some 180 degree turns and they didn't always survive a reality check.

However the step by step revelations never stop unfolding along the way as the mysteries are gradually exposed. This fuels the story effectively until the very end. The two main plot lines are nicely tied together although you need to get to the Epilogue before that happens.

Anyway acknowledging a little literary license the flaws are easily ignored any you are left with a very satisfying thriller.

Book Review: Suspense Packed Book!
Summary: 5 Stars

The star of this book is Paul Copeland the Essex County Prosecutor. He
and his former girlfriend Lucy Gold were involved in an incident at a summer camp. Two teenagers were murdered and two more dissapeared. One of
the dissapearing teenagers was Copeland's sister. Wayne Steubens the Summer Slasher was convicted of the murders. One of the missing teens,Gil Perez is finally found,a murder victim. Copeland begins to wonder if hif sister Camille could be alive as well. Copeland is involved in a high profile case. Pressure is being applied to stop his prosecution of two
wealthy college kids. Besides all of this he is raising a 6 year old daughter as well. There are many twists and turns as thie camp mystery
is unraveled. Deep unknown secrets are uncovered as this story evolves.
This is an excellent thriller that you should take time to read. You will
enjoy this book.

Book Review: 5 star thriller!
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm glad to see Coben's latest thriller on all the bestseller lists, he really is one of the smartest thriller writers around. Great plots involving real characters you can care about are this authors hallmarks. 20 years ago, two teens were murdered and two more were never seen again after they walked into the woods at their summer camp. County prosecutor Paul Copeland was one of the four teens involved in the camp incident, and he is now involved in the case of a Black woman claiming to have been raped by some rich, white frat boys at a party. Woods does an excellent job of weaving these two plots together in an entertaining and suspenseful read. If you like thrillers, I can highly recommend this one. Just make sure to clear out your schedule once you crack it open!.

Book Review: Once again, a brilliant thriller by H. Coben
Summary: 5 Stars

A twenty-year-old mystery resurfaces, about four teenagers who went missing from the woods. One of them was Paul Copeland's (Cope) sister. Cope is now a prosecutor and a widower with a young daughter. Another body turns up. And things start spinning, the past has to be faced once again...

Another brilliant thriller by H. Coben. As usual, fast and gripping, a true page-turner, until the very end. What I particularly like about his books is that he never leaves any details out, nothing goes unanswered. That's what a good, entertaining mystery book should always be about!
