Book Review: happily required reading for son's school
Summary: 5 Stars
I had heard neither of the book nor its author, but my son's school requires this as summer reading before entering the third grade. He read it first, enjoyed it, and then I read it aloud to him, which was delightful.
Eleanor Cameron's writing is like Ray Bradbury's in that it's magical, mysterious, and appealing to young boys (but without some of the darkness Bradbury often visits).
One aspect I found personally nostalgic was having to explain about boys and their families in the 1950s. For example, my son had no idea what a "canning jar" was until we talked about it. The vocabulary is sufficiently developed to provide other teaching moments. Overall, highly recommended.
