Book Reviews of The Wheels on the Bus

Book Review: It's been a family favorite, and a very durable Pop-Up !
Summary: 5 Stars

This "pop-up" is in a class by itself! But, it's probably more precise to call it, "A Book With Parts That Move", as the cover says. Maybe it doesn't really matter what you call it, as long as you call it "fun". Its great graphics and moving parts really attract children's interest and participation, and gives them a chance to practice manipulation skills. And, of course, it leads you through the great "Wheels on the Bus" song.

It's our 9-month-old daughter's current favorite. She either responds instantly to an invitation to read it, or implores us to read it. She'll even sometimes crawl to it, open it up herself and go through the pages, pulling and spinning things as she goes through. She especially loves to spin the movable wheels (and to pull at them). The movable heads of the bus-driver, and of some of the riders, are irresistible too, as are the movable windshield wipers on the bus. She gets a kick out of all of the movable parts. As we read it together, she is starting to pull the tabs to get the parts to move.

But, I think that you can count on a lot of good-natured, determined, tugging at the movable parts. So, it's good that it's a really durable book. We have the version by Paul O. Zelinsky, with paper engineering by Rodger Smith, published by Dutton Children's Books, and it's one tough book! Our book is about 3 years old now, because we originally bought it for our first daughter. We used it heavily throughout her first 2 years, so ours has had it's share of taping to repair tears that young eager hands occasionally managed to make. As a credit to the book's quality, the repairs have allowed it to continue on in good working order. As I've repaired it, I've noticed some of the details in the design and construction of this book, and I've come to admire its quality. I think it must have been a labor of love for those who contributed to it. If you buy one "pop-up" for your children, or as a gift, this is the one I would recommend.

Summary of The Wheels on the Bus

When The Wheels on the Bus, by Caldecott Medalist Paul O. Zelinsky, broke onto the scene twelve years ago, it created a sensation with its clever characters, sly subplots, luscious colors, and the incomparable flair of its moving parts. Almost a million young readers have enjoyed the wheels that go round, doors that open and shut, and people who go bumpety-bump. Today it remains as fresh and engaging as when it was first published.
"The wheels on the bus go round and round.... All over town." This traditional song, a favorite of children everywhere, is adapted and illustrated by Paul O. Zelinsky, winner of the Caldecott Medal for his lush version of Rapunzel, and Caldecott honors for Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel and Gretel, and Swamp Angel. Fantastic paper engineering with movable parts, flaps, and wheels that spin makes this an interactive book that young readers will love to pieces (maybe literally!). Pull one tab to make the "wipers on the bus go swish swish swish," and another to see the "babies on the bus cry Waah! Waah! Waah!" On closer inspection, children will be tickled to discover several subtle and humorous subplots, as well as a full-circle finale: the last stop on the bus is at the Overtown public library, where the day's program includes a folk singer. Guess what he's singing!

Zelinsky's warm, inviting illustrations are a perfect match for this classic play rhyme. Children who have learned the hand motions to the song will enjoy helping the characters in the book enact their own roles. The back cover includes the musical notation for "The Wheels on the Bus," so everyone can sing along. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter
