Book Reviews of The Waste Lands (The Dark Tower, Book 3)

Book Review: Long days and pleasant nights...
Summary: 5 Stars

as you read through the Dark Tower series.

Next to Roland, Jake is my favorite member of the Dark Tower ka-tet. I am in the middle of Wolves right now, so it is kind of hard to remember all the details of the book two volumes prior. What I remember most was the way King navigated the torn memories of both Roland and Jake before the eventual drawing of the third. I didn't realize when it happened that rescuing Jake in New York '77 was going to cause such repercussions, but I think it was fitting it did. Roland (and at that time, readers don't know about the emotional turmoil in his past), in order to be a protagonist we can stay with, needed to be punished for the way he dropped Jake with nary a second thought. Roland had to earn Jake's loyalty and love, not that it was difficult as it probably should have been - Jake was desperate for a noble father figure.

Another thing that blew me away was when Eddie blew Shardik apart and he was a frickin' robot! Wha?! <Disbelieving head shake> Just when you feel like you have a handle on this thing, he throws something like that at you. That sounds like a complaint, but it's more like amazement. I read somewhere (transcripts of his recent talk with Rowling in New York? the prologue?) that Stephen King doesn't plan his books, that they just come to him as he types. Talk about Ka. Speaking of which, isn't it kind of neat how you can still feel suspense even though you know Ka will guide them in the right direction? Perhaps that was why Jake was dropped? To keep the reader guessing?

I also liked the encounter with the old people before the ka-tet got to the city. It is neat to see how revered Gunslingers were before the world moved on. I really enjoy reading all the cultural things: the greetings and sayings that tell so much about the values of the former society. I love the ceremony with which even average people treat each other. It is almost hard to believe that the world passed on. Who was responsible? John Farson, the Good Man? Greed of men, in general?

Gasher and the Tick-Tock Man freaked me out. Ugh, so evil!

And Blaine - toss a dose of computer gone bad into the mix. What a pain! Who were the Old Ones?

In conclusion, thank goodness I didn't start reading this until all the books were out. I can't imagine waiting up to seven years before getting the next installment, especially with the way this one ended. It's bad enough when I finish one and can't borrow the next one from my friend and his family for a couple of days. (There have been four of us reading through at the same time.) If you haven't started it yet, get into the Dark Tower! "Time is a face on the water," you'll see.

Summary of The Waste Lands (The Dark Tower, Book 3)

Roland, The Last Gunslinger, moves ever closer to The Dark Tower of his dreams-and nightmares-as he crosses a desert of damnation in a macabre world that is a twisted image of our own...
