Book Review: When something terrible rears its head

An old face has returned to the fold after a lot of time off. rick manages to find him and, if it weren't for Rick, I'm not sure what the group would have done. combine that with the people getting back together and you have a tattered team of people, some still hurting from the Super Jail incident, coming back together in a world that really wants them dead. The gorup has changed, however, becoming colder and much, much more open to the things that come from the outside. They no longer have the moral apptitude that they once had, perhaps losing too many in the process, and it shows. Desite all of this, however, you can still see the problems in the group. One of those is that they find themselves falling back into old habits. Amongst those are dragging their feet a little, and not really putting up the watch they used to have. Added to this is the fact that one of their group is hurting bad, and by bad I mean that death is knocking at his mental door. Combine this with the fact that they have an element on their tail that isn't zombie but that is really horrific and you have a story that is really worth reading. Here you lose someone - I know that this happens a lot but this time you really lose a character you know. Its sad, really, when you thinka bout it. Still, this is the world that the people live in.
When I read this arch in the story, I was horrified by what I saw. It wasn't so much that the story was something awful or that something happened that was too much for it. It was simply seeing osmething happen that I really didn't expect to. Perhaps this is one of the things that makes the series great - not only do we have a group that is bent on survival but we see what the world has become as well. We really see that here, and I really hate what happens in some ways. i know this is intentionally vague, but I don't want anything to ruin what happens because peoplewho have been keeping up will find it sad and impacting. The ripples from this event will run through the group for some time to come, too, making things in 12 and 13 have that much more impact.
Its really good stuff.
The zombies themselves have not become as much of a problem except when they hit en masse, but they are still a deadly thing when encountered. We are reminded of that fact as well, and I'm glad of that. For a time i felt like the zzombies we second-hand characters and that the group was more worried about the human element they were encountered. Well, this has a little taste of both. Combine that with the fact that the characters are becoming more and more of their own peope and you really have something that is more than unique in this genre. you have something amazingly done and that continues to have the art/ style that empowers it all.
If you are new, do not read out of order. It will ruin things. Also, AMC has the story out and people have been browsing to see what happens. Whle you do find out things this way, some things take twists and twine through the world. this means that you might ruin something and you might trip across a story arc, but that you wil possibly destroy something quite enjoyable. The series is a landmark achievement and, as a whole, well worth picking up. It take a lot to last this long and even more to keep us tuned in. Still, this has it all.
The bok here gets its 5 most deservedly.
