Book Review: Great Self-Promoter, Banal Writer

If La Sontag had as much talent as a writer and thinker as she did as a self-promoter she would have been short-listed for the Nobel Prize. Alas, when you go beyond the famous b/w photos from her youth--showing nothing more, after all, than a gift for striking "attitudes" like Lady Hamilton--and beyond the fashionable political posturing of her later years, you are left with such mediocre works as this one, The Volcano Lover. If you have any doubt that Sontag possessed very few of the gifts of a novelist this book will remove them; if you at least expect the insight purportedly contained in her old overly-hyped essays you will find instead only the most banal observations offered in a generally uninteresting style. Yes, the novel is based on a fascinating historical trio, but Sontag is incapable of doing all that much with them. And if you want more, if you're interested in the historical and biographical sources on which she based this novel, well, tough luck, as La Sontag is not about to share credit with anyone and refers only in the most general terms to the "many modern historical studies and biographies" that inspired her. Well, when you do as little with your source material as she does, it's probably best not to provide any basis for comparison. Whether you're interested in these historical figures, or you just want to read a good historical novel, you can do far far better than this book.
