Book Reviews of The Virtue of Selfishness (Signet)

Book Review: Extraordinary!
Summary: 5 Stars

To read about selfishness as a virtue to some may at first appear questionable- in this regard the spirit of altruism to the point of going above and beyond your Self, your own means, or enabling others is well clarified here. Where not a unique concept, this book provides a valuable and clear message about maintaining our own individuality, while also expounding upon themes of capitalist thought and the concept of man's ability to be 'heroic' and masterful in his day to day as a necessity, not an option, for society. This essay reminds us that success need not be frowned upon especially when created through one's own effort, commitment, and diligence, via integrity and not at the expense of ourselves (or others).

Book Review: Read this one first
Summary: 5 Stars

No other book came close to conveying the way I felt and the way I thought when I read this at the age of 19. I had the unique opportunity of reading this philosophical overview BEFORE I read her works of fiction and it was extremely valuable to know exactly where Rand was coming from at all times when I did read Anthem, We the Living, The Fountainhead, and Atlas Shrugged. Also includes an excellent introduction to the writings of renowned psychologist Nathaniel Branden, whose essays I actually prefer over Rand's. Check out Branden's "Six Pillars of Self-Esteem". All of these books proved exciting reads and were literally inhaled in the matter of a couple of months.

Book Review: One of the best books I've ever read...
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first read this book, my reaction was " I am selfish and there's nothing wrong with me". I never understood why some people hate Ayn Rand. Is it because her books force you to look deep inside yourself? And what you find there might not always be pleasant? I've never been comfortable with the idea that the more you "sacrifice", the better person you become. Ayn Rand advocates quite the opposite. She simply says every person should be selfish. However, the careful reader will know that her philosophy goes beyond just childish anti-socialism. She redefines selfishness. To be without an ego is to be dead. I agree 100%. Kudos to her.

Book Review: The Selfish Objectivism of Rand's Detractors
Summary: 5 Stars

If you're not selfish and objective, you'll never be enough of a person to help a single soul, including yourself.

This is a daring seminal work in one of the core controversies of human history: individualism versus forced altruistic collectivism.

The problem for those poor raging anti-Randians ( who lust to scold the rest of us) is that they necessarily assume Rand's rationalistic self-interest doctrine in the process of criticizing it.

Preachers of universal unselfishness want you to help any self in the world---AS LONG AS IT'S NOT *YOU*.

Forced love, from body or paycheck, is rape. And it will always produce hate and misery.

Book Review: The greatest book on ethics ever
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is indispensible reading for anyone who has read Ayn Rand's novels. It is a great book and in it Ayn Rand did a supurb job of explaining the essentials of the ethics of her philosopy, Objectivism.

Anyone who agrees with the ideas expressed in her novels should read this work next and use their own judgement to decide if Ayn Rand was right or not. They should not accept the opinions of altruist-collectivist reviewers, who still dominate our culture today, and are always ready to smear her. Considering the greatness of Ayn Rand's philosphy, I don't think that such people will continue to do so for long.
