Book Reviews of The Uncommon Reader: A NovellaBook Review: One Has An Interest Summary: 5 Stars
This little book is a joy. Always witty and amusing, often laugh-out-loud funny; Alan Bennett brilliantly captures the controlled upset that ensues within and without Buckingham Palace when the Queen pursues the joy of reading to the detriment of her usual routines.
Book Review: wonderful uolifting read Summary: 5 Stars
This short book by humorist and playwright Bennett is a delight. It celebrates reading as a universal activity with the Queen of England being initiated into the club by a lowly page who is an avid reader with surprising results for both.
A slim volume and a great gift.
Book Review: A Jewel in the literary crown. Summary: 5 Stars
The Common Reader is a compact, beautifully witten account of British social class, royal life, and love of literature. Coming from the writer of The History Boys it was a marvellous surprise. Although the topic is probably the same, the tone and characters are unique.
Book Review: God Save the Queen! Summary: 5 Stars
Allan Bennet's "The Uncommon Reader" is an excellent little book. The whole premise is funny from the very first sentence , and his characterization of the "Royals" is quite outstanding. A good short read whether you are an anglophile or not.
Book Review: A REAL WINNER! Summary: 5 Stars
Funny, charming, beautifully developed...and a little dangerous. Just what you would expect Alan Bennett. Anyone who loves reading will love it. A great book to share with friends who are readers.
