Book Reviews of The Uncommon Reader: A Novella

Book Review: A Royal Page Turner
Summary: 5 Stars

I love to read, but it is unusual for me to find a book that I can best describe as being fun to read-not instructive, not thought provoking, not disturbing, not life changing or life affirming- (although this book in some ways does all that as well)-but fun to read. The kind of book that makes me laugh out loud because the situation is so delightful and outlandish, and yet in a very quirky way, very believable.

Oh! I forgot to tell you what book I'm talking about. . . Well, it's the book I've been recommending to everyone I've seen in the past few days. I tell them, "You've got to read this book. It will make you laugh, and you will identify with the love of reading it conveys on every page. Put down everything else you're reading and read this book. Now"

So, this book I'm raving about is The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett. Alan Bennett is one of my favorite writers. A few years ago I wrote about how much I loved his very odd little book The Clothes They Stood Up In. And last year I told all my friends about the movie made of his Tony-award winning play The History Boys. And, by the way, he also wrote The Madness of George III.

Alan Bennett is funny in the wry, iconoclastic, gentle/ferocious, literate, sly way that only the very best comic writers can be. I react the same way to him that I do to James Thurber and love him most when he's making fun of what I normally think or do. In other words, Bennett (and Thurber and Twain and other writers of their ilk) can make me laugh heartily at the foibles of others, and even more uproariously at my own conceits and follies.

Now Alan Bennett's latest book (a slender volume of 120 pages) is about the current Queen of England. . . yes, that Elizabeth, the one we've all come to like a lot more since Helen Mirren played her in the movie The Queen. Bennett imagines that Queen Elizabeth one day stumbles upon a library bookmobile on her grounds at Windsor Castle, and strictly through politeness decides to take out a book. Returning the book a few days later, she decides to take out another book, and before she knows what has happened she finds herself hooked. Hooked on books. Hooked to the extent that she begins to resent and neglect her many royal duties because they cut into her precious reading time. Hooked, and what's more, for the first time in her royal lifetime, she begins to understand, a little, how the other 99.99 percent of the world lives.

If, in fact, the greatest books are all inherently subversive, as some have said, then reading those books would be an act of subversion as well. At least, the Queen's many courtiers and advisors come to think so, with even her Prime Minister feeling a great unease at having her quiz him about the books he is reading. But will all the Queen's advisors be able to pry her away from her new- found love, no, her obsession with books? And if the Queen cannot get enough of the printed word, what will it mean for England?

For the answer to these questions, you have got to read this book. Now. By the way, I think it would make a perfect present for your friends and family who love to read. But first, read it-and laugh-yourself.

Summary of The Uncommon Reader: A Novella

From one of England's most celebrated writers, the author of the award-winning The History Boys, a funny and superbly observed novella about the Queen of England and the subversive power of reading

When her corgis stray into a mobile library parked near Buckingham Palace, the Queen feels duty-bound to borrow a book. Discovering the joy of reading widely (from J. R. Ackerley, Jean Genet, and Ivy Compton-Burnett to the classics) and intelligently, she finds that her view of the world changes dramatically. Abetted in her newfound obsession by Norman, a young man from the royal kitchens, the Queen comes to question the prescribed order of the world and loses patience with the routines of her role as monarch. Her new passion for reading initially alarms the palace staff and soon leads to surprising and very funny consequences for the country at large.
