Book Review for The Two Princess of Bamarre

"Step follows step. Hope follows courage. Set your face toward danger. Set your heart on victory." This is just one of the many saying that is in this incredible fantasy. The Two Princess of Bamarre by Gail Carson is a story about finding your inner courage to achieve what you want.
Princess Adelina (Addie) was one of the biggest cowards at the beginning of the story. She was frightened at some of the littlest things such as spiders. But when her sister falls ill of the fatal disease, the Gray Death, she decides she'll go on a journey for the cure. Through frightening monsters to cunning dragons, she finds courage within herself to face them. With her perseverance and determination she goes on, but with time, her sister's life is slowly ticking by.
In the kingdom of Bamarre, in mythical times is when this enchanting story takes place. About a period of a month goes by in this frightening journey for Addie. Through the western forests of specters to the creepy caves of the dragon Volley, she travels through the land of Bamarre. With a brave heart she wanders through these chaotic places, but with each passing day her sister becomes weaker and weaker. Once her sister starts to sleep she will have only nineteen days left to live. This leaves Addie the only choice but to find the fairies because they are supposedly to know the cure of the Gray Death. Addie must locate the spot between Mount Ziriat where it descends slightly because that is where the fairies are to be. But can she make it through the lands safely also be able to save her sister in time?
"If I had caught the Gray Death instead of Meryl, she would have begun her quest the moment Milton pronounced my doom." This is the thought that got the amazing trip started. With her sister Meryl dying, Princess Addie decides it's her destiny to save her, even though she is the coward sister. Throughout the adventure she encounters dreadful things such as specters, ogres, and even dragons! The dragon, Volley, who captured her, told the cure, but Addie is held prisoner against her will and would be killed as soon as Volley loses interest in her. To save her sister she must find a way to outsmart the dragon, nevertheless get to the fairies in time. But to do this she is risking precious time of her dear sister. To find out if she escapes and furthermore save her sister in time, read the book.
Finding your inner courage to achieve what you want is truly what this book shows the reader. Addie, leaving her comfort zone to save her sister from the disease is pure courage, but trying to find a dragon to get the knowledge of the cure shows the theme of this book. She risk's her life to achieve the information she wants for her sister sake, but gains the knowledge of which she was seeking. To me, this book takes me on a learning of battling your deepest fears to accomplish what you want. I would rate this book a 5 because it's a fantastic book that I think most people would enjoy especially those who like fairy tales.

Summary of The Two Princesses of Bamarre

A kingdom beset by monsters . . .
A disease that weakens and destroys . . .
An epic poem and a hero of long ago . . .
A story of danger and desperation.

The Two Princesses of Bamarre couldn't be more different. Princess Addie is fearful and shy. Her deepest wish is for safety. Princess Meryl is bold and brave. Her deepest wish is to save the kingdom of Bamarre. They are sisters, and they mean the world to each other.

Then disaster strikes, and Addie -- terrified and unprepared -- sets out on a perilous quest. In her path are monsters of Bamarre: ogres, specters, gryphons, and dragons. Addie must battle them, but time is running out, and the sister's lives -- and Barmarre's fate -- hang in the balance.

Gail Carson Levine left her mark on fantasy with her well-loved 1998 Newbery Honor book Ella Enchanted. Now she has created another shimmering and tapestried landscape of fantasy and fairies. Bamarre and the journeys of its two princesses will burn themselves into the minds of readers, and all will relish this moving saga about two sisters groping their way toward heroism.

After stealing the hearts of middle-grade girls with her delightful Newbery Honor-winning Cinderella retelling, Ella Enchanted, Gail Carson Levine here creates a fairy tale of her own and gives it a characteristic grrrl-power twist. Twelve-year-old Addie admires her older sister Meryl, who aspires to rid the kingdom of Bamarre of gryphons, specters, and ogres. Addie, on the other hand, is fearful even of spiders and depends on Meryl for courage and protection. Waving her sword Bloodbiter, the older girl declaims in the garden from the heroic epic of Drualt to a thrilled audience of Addie, their governess, and the young sorcerer Rhys. But when Meryl falls ill with the dreaded Gray Death, Addie must gather her courage and set off alone on a quest to find the cure and save her beloved sister. Addie takes the seven-league boots and magic spyglass left to her by her mother and the enchanted tablecloth and cloak given to her by Rhys--along with a shy declaration of his love. She prevails in encounters with tricky specters (spiders too) and outwits a wickedly personable dragon in adventures touched with romance and a bittersweet ending. Young fans of princess stories will gobble this one up. (Ages 10 to 14) --Patty Campbell
