This book was hard for me to read. I tend to get emotionally involved in characters in a book and the abuse Esmeralda suffered due to her boyfriend was terrible for lack of a better work. In fact I have not read the book since, as I have her others. I can only imagine what it would have been like living it!
But wait! You still should buy and read this book.
The book picks up right where her last memoir "Almost A Woman" left off. We follow young Negi as she leaves home and moves away with her much older turkish boyfriend, all across the US. He is controlling and manipulative. He makes her do his homework, takes her paychecks, slaps her when she steps out of line. He's very jealous and insecure too. Once could argue she left her 'warden' of a mother to a 'warden' of a boyfriend!
The memoir isn't preachy though. She could be writing it as a warning to a young person not to get involved in a toxic relationship. Esmeralda states the facts just as they are.
Moving from city to city, meeting people was nice to read. Esmeralda is so descriptive in her writing you feel as though you are right there experienceing it yourself-I LOVE that about her writing. I don't want to give too much away. Please read this book.
I would reccommend you read her first 2 memoirs before you reasd this one.
