Book Reviews of The Truth Is . . .: My Life in Love and MusicBook Review: A very personal, no holds barred poignant 'story' Summary: 5 Stars
I must be the only person in Singapore aware of this book cos it isn't to be found in any bookstore here. I had to order it from an international bookstore, which took forever! But the wait was well worth it. I have never read an autobiography this real, without all the fluff that usually accompanies the rest - or rather, the hypocrisy. The story about Melissa's life right up to this point in time as she is embarking on a new relationship with someone else she feels will accept her for who she is and fills the deep aching void in her heart rings a chord in me. We are all in search of that, regrdless of our sexual inclinations. Probably this is what gives this book a universal appeal. I wanted to cry so much when she revealed her childhood which sounds exactly like mine - where things always get swept under the rug, and communication about feelings and what's real never take centrestage. Knowing Melissa's frame of mind when she wrote her songs also adds a depth into my understanding - her torture, her pain, her anguish, her longing are all clearly spelt out. I have read the book twice, and intend to go on reading it even though it hurts so - cos she has become a friend, through the pages. After reading about how she performs with passion and gives it all she's got makes me more determined to catch her concert, wherever it may be. Seriously doubt if Melissa will fly to Singapore cos alot here are a homophobic crowd ..... but no matter - its an excellent book that's raw, heartfelt and very very real.
