Book Reviews of The True Story of Florence BallardBook Review: BUY THIS BOOK IF YOU WANT TO KNOW THE REAL FLO! Summary: 5 Stars
Most fans of the Motown era know that it all started in Detroit, Michigan, to Hitsville, U.S.A., 1962, before Berry Gordy sold out the first time, by moving his factory out of town to Los Angeles. The real power behind Motown came from people who had, essentially, grown up in the projects - people like Holland-Dozier-Holland and the Funk Brothers. By reading this book, I found out that Flo Ballard was one of those people. I never knew about Flo Ballard's up-close and personal struggles with alcohol - or that her own father had suffered from the addiction his entire life - of course, not until I read this book. So, blast it if you want, but if you REALLY want to know about the life of Flo Ballard, this book will explain everything you THINK you know about her life - not to mention the fact that an actual copy of the coroner's report is included in the book - which creates even more questions in my mind about her death. This is a family story - one told from the heart and with the insight of her sister. I would recommend this to anyone not just trying to hear the same story of Diana ROSS and Mary WILSON and THE SUPREMES - THAT story has been told so many times and it is tired! Buy this book - it's worth every dollar!
Summary of The True Story of Florence BallardFlorence Blondie Ballard, Diane Diana Ross and Mary Wilson met and became childhood friends during the 1950s. Under the watchful eye and skilled tutelage of Milton Jenkins, the friends later became the trio The Primettes, ultimately transformed into the greatest female singing group of all time, The Supremes. In 1967, Florence Ballard left the group, and though much has been written about her life after the Supremes, the true facts of her story have never surfaced - until now. Maxine Precious Ballard Jenkins, the sister of Florence Ballard, has written the true account of Florence Ballard's life, including her reasons behind leaving the group, the relationship she shared with childhood friends, Mary and Diane, and the dramatic turn her life took in later years. The book also helps to dispel many of the rumors surrounding Florence Ballard's death. Your view of Florence Ballard and her life will be dramatically reversed after reading this book!
