Book Review: I Wanna Be a Stooge

Here is an easy way to discover everything we ever wanted to know about the Three Stooges. It's called, "The Three Stooges Scrapbook" (Citidel Press, 1999) by jeff Lenburg, Joan Howard Maurer, and Greg Lenburg -- a LibraryThing Early Reviewers book for October 2009.
Thanks to its scrapbook format, there are more than a thousand black and white illustrations (candid photos, artists' sketches, film clips, handbills, playbills, comic strips, and the like) in the 288 pages of this 8.5 x 11 inch volume. There are splendid full-page portraits accompanying the biographies of Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Shemp Howard, the original Three Stooges. You will also find equally flattering portraits and portraitures of Jerome "Curly" Howard, Joe Besser and Joe DeRita. Yes, over a 40-year career that lasted from 1930 until 1970, it took six different men to play the parts of the Three Stooges.
The Scrapbook begins with 50 pages devoted to biographical vignettes of the six Three Stooges and ends with 60 pages dedicated to Three Stooges filmography. In between there are seven chapters covering Three Stooges history, Three Stooges merchandise, Three Stooges comic books, Three Stooges on TV (whence came the "Three Stooges Scrapbook" title), Three Stooges recordings (both albums and singles), Three Stooges impersonators, and the growing Three Stooges cult.
Random Scenes We've All Enjoyed: the Stooges eating hotcakes (consuming powder puffs by mistake); the Stooges riding into Coleslawvania, visiting their girl friends, Tilly, Lilly and Milly, entangling in a sword fight with Mergatroyd; garage mechanics Moe, Larry, and Shemp about to lose their brides-to-be, Nettie, Hettie and Betty, to three plumbers if they don't make good soon; the Onion Oil Company, after being held up by a gang of organized mobsters, hires three private detectives -- Stooges all -- posing as gas station attendants to solve their case; and, shades of High Noon, we see the Stooges becoming shooting targets following their wedding to Stella, Bella and Ella, complete with an old cowpoke singing and strumming his guitar off key.
Trivia: Curly was the most inventive of the Three Stooges. Two of his classic catch-phrases have become a part of America's vocabulary and culture: "Nyuk-nyuk-nyuk" and "Wooo-wooo-wooo!"
